New BMW smoking like crazy...weird!

I was in d/t traffic heading home yesterday, and in the next lane over there was a nearly-new BMW 750 'IL' sedan. I don't know exactly what year it was, but it couldn't have been more than two years old, I'm sure.

When the car accelerated, it blew HUGE amounts of blue oil smoke out the tailpipe! When it drove along, it puffed a bit of oil smoke, but when it accelerated, man, was it a fogger! I mean, a worn-out Vega had nothing on this car!

I was suprised that something this new would have a problem like that...I mean, I know you can neglect a car, but this one didn't even seem old enough to have any issues!

The car did have diplomatic plates on it, so that would explain why it hadn't been stopped, b/c it would have failed a visualinspection on the spot.

This has been a big problem that weve had a few complaints about lately. We had a 750il limo with 160k that just started smoking, and 2 privately owned cars with under 80k each. One went to a local dealer, they told him new valve stem seals, for only 7000! I wonder if the 15k interval has anything to do with this.

I think when a car smokes under heavy load the rings and cylinder seal is also bad. Maybe it's that thick Euro oil to blame

Probably a diesel as someone posted but without the advanced emission controls for use in foreign countries.
Not that Canada has bad diesel but for Diplomatic use they are all left dirty as their final destination is unknown and fuel quality is a concern in some countries.

I can visualize Hans Gruber in the driver seat, yelling "DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITYYYYYYyyyy!!!" as he smokes off into the distance.

I've seen a few 7 series smoking badly. the most memorable one was in traffic, it was smoking and it clearly wasn't idling right, because he kept reviving it up.

Um no, modern BMW diesels don't smoke. Heck 20 year old ones didn't smoke that much.

Off the top of my head I think the diesel 7 would be the 730D which is a similar motor to what is used in the 335D. They meet all modern Euro emissions standards which are pretty strict, just more realistic than our communist diesel banning EPA.

Yeah, I don't buy for a second that BMW produces anything less than a Euro4 diesel, and only for markets with the most sulfurous fuel. Even here downunder these would be Euro5 with particulate filters.

And the OP said the smoke was blueish. I think you'd be able to tell motor oil burning from a smokey diesel.

Happens to plenty of cars. We don't know the history on this one. I was behind a riced-out Civic blowing copious amounts of smoke today, and the Expedition and its 6,000lbs of glory had no problem getting ahead of him on the 401 even when he decided he didn't want me to.

Being a BMW doesn't make it immune to neglect or just being a defective POS. Just like being a Honda didn't stop this car from succumbing to its fate.

Mercedes is not much better these days and both of them are expensive to rebuild.
