New bike. 10w40. / chain lube

The Yamaha xsr700 comes with 10w40. I don’t ride hard. Easy peasy actually. I guess Yamalube is nothing special vs standard name motorcycle oils. I was thinking Amazon Valvoline full synthetic 10W40. $10 a quart shipped. Stick with Yamaha named oil filter ???? What’s the chain lube of choice ??? Thanks Wardawg

The Valvoline Motorcycle oil will work just fine. I prefer OEM filters. Chain wax for the chain lube.

I use Hengst H97W06 filters on my bikes. Yamaha and Kawasaki both use this filter. They are $4 each on Rockauto and cut apart are every bit the same quality as the $20 OEM filters. I buy 12 at a time because they also fit all three of my Kubota diesels. Never an issue.

Any 10w40 Motorcycle oil will work great in the Yamaha CP2 engine. The Valvoline is a great choice. I would run the OEM filters and for chain lube I’ve always found Dupont Chain saver from Walmart to be as good as any and it’s cheap. I got 21k mile out of my KTM 790 chain using it and it still was in good shape.

There are plenty of good quality 10w-40 moto oils available. Choose one. For chain lube I use the following. It is no muss no fuss and my chains last and last.

Bar or gear oil make a huge mess. I prefer a chain wax of some sort. It doesn't last as long as sticky oil type lubes, but it's good enough and is much cleaner. Chain lube is mostly there to protect the sprockets and the outside of the rollers. The critical chain lube is sealed inside the chain, not what you spray on the outside.

Regarding oil, you can use just about anything. We used Rotella 5W-40 in my sons MT07 and it ran great with it.

The Drive chain is an O-ring" or X-ring. Cleaning after riding in the rain is important, then a light lube. I've got a collection through the years. The small cans are for traveling. A centerstand is a must for chain lubing on a trip.

This CP2 engine is bulletproof, some friends on Tenere 700 they already pass 100.000km and some other going for 150.000km

They run Motul 7100 10W60 for desert temps and dirt enduro roads.

the market and the right solution everyone has been looking to *properly*
lube their chain and sprockets because it brushes a layer of white grease like
from the factory that clings with no flings...

Motul Chain Paste... squeeze the white grease from the tube and load
the brush...

Hold the loaded brush to the inside of the chain rollers to transfer
the white grease...

We’re all different in terms of what we like. I tried this stuff and I ended up with a gooey mix of lube, road grit and dirt. Never again. The Super Slick Stuff I posted above does none of that. Super clean and is X and O ring safe. Couldn’t be easier.

I've used the Hiflofiltro (ie, "HiFlo") oil filters before - pretty decent cycle filter. You'd have to figure out which on the XSR700 takes.

I used this oil in my Yamaha XSR900 ... decent price right now on Amazon considering the way other motor oils have been going up.

I use Motul 300V 4T motor oil in our sportbikes, but do not care for their chain paste. It flings, and attracts and holds dirt, just like the lube on new chains.

For chain lube, after trying all I could find over the years, I like the Honda HP Chain lube with moly.
