New B&S engine with an oil cooler...

I was at Lowes tonight looking at mowers while I waited for my daughter to do her shopping. I was looking at a Husqvarna 21hp tractor that had a Briggs Vanguard OHV twin engine and was amazed to see this. A small cast manifold was attached to the engine to provide the oil filter mounting boss also had two lines running from it to a small ( 5" X 4" ) oil cooler!

From the location on the outside of the fan shroud I don't know how much good it will do, but it was nice to see they might finally be getting out of building things the same way they did in 1960. There may be hope for them yet...

Some Kohlers are also equipped with oil coolers.
They sell an aftermarket kit that might even be adaptable to a Briggs.

crazy, i hope they start making them more like cars with better cooling fans, radiator, better tuned exhaust note, etc...

if they do have these things, i haven't noticed.

I intend to buy a new mower next spring so I've started looking at them more carefully. The new mowers seem to be better in most ways than the ones of a few years ago. Grease zirks on important bearings, cast iron axles, ducting so the cooling fans get fresh air, pressurized lube sytems with filters and coolers, etc. There are dozens of things on $2000 mowers now that used to only be available on machines costing $5K or more.

Considering I've gotten 10 years of hard use out of a $1000 12hp White, it looks like almost anything I buy for $3K or more should last a long time...

Be aware that not all engines with filters are full pressure lube. Some are pressure to the filter only.
Of course, splash lube engines don't have a bad history!

The V-twins have come with oil coolers for quite a while...

Maybe the Vanguard engines, but the cheaper models have a filter on the engine and no cooler. I suppose it's possible it's an option for eveything and up to the OEM to decide if they want it or not...

I had not considered this. You would think that if they were to put some type of oil pump in the motor, they'd get as much use out of it as possible. Is it simply the casting changes necessary to pump the oil to the top of the motor would be cost prohibitive ... or is it because there's essentially no place for the oil to go in a flathead?

Yes, that big V-twin sure is something else. The size of those pistons is right in American V8 territory.

That'd make some go-kart motor ... but with the power best between 2,200 - 3,600 ROMs, it's probably best suited to tractors and other commercial uses ... unless you want to build a tiny, rock-climbing buggy.

The original Honda 3.5hp and 5hp flat head engines used on their self propelled mowers like the SX-21 had a trochoid oil pump and pressure lubrication. No oil filter though. Go figure...
