I've been sort of looking for an air compressor for over a year now, and just this past week my trusty old, 10 gal air tank has shown strong signs of a bad leak. Filled Oh well- paid 20 buck$ way back, got 20 yrs use, guess that's OK $ worth out of it.

I kept missing every decent deal that came along on a used air compressor- most recently a Craftsman that sold by 8 am the first morning the ad ran- and finally bought a new one today.

Just a Harbor Freight, direct drive, oil-lubed electric compressor with an 8-gal tank. Pretty small, but it'll be plenty to air up tires, use a blow gun, & will probably power a 1/2" drive impact well enough, though not continuously. Normally $130-$140, on sale now for $100, plus used a 20% off coupon to get the bare naked compressor down to $80. Added a "starter kit" to that(25' coiled plastic hose, plenty of fittings for now, air chuck, blow gun, etc) for $15, & a couple pints compressor oil for a total of back to $100. It'll be good enough for now, may add a small impact later.(yeah, I coulda bought a qt of non-det SAE 30 for a little less, but time was running short for other errands & it was Right There!

I still have a couple of gallons of old formula Lube Control. Any reason not to add a little to the compressor oil? Say, one ounce to the 20-22 oz fill.

wouldnt see why not, but then again i dont really know much about compressors. i run m1 5w30 in our OLD speedair.

How long have you used M1 5-30? Thinking about putting that in mine.

Air compressors don't need the additives used in automotive oils, use a simple oil of the recommended weight with no additives.
If you want to use synthetic Amsoil 20w (it cannot be bought in 30w quarts) or Redline 30W compressor oil are good choices.

The seals and gaskets may or may not be compatible with automotive oil why take a chance. My large pressure lubed Quincy strictly forbids automotive oils.

Used non-detergent motor oil available from some of the larger gas stations locally in the 4-gallon, 130psi oil-lubed compressors we used doing trim carpentry. These compressors would run very high duty cycles without issue even in 100+F temps. Same oil I use in my 21-gallon compressor at home. Very cheap and perfectly fine for even very hard working compressors.
