I bought a new-ish 2018 Explorer Platinum last month. It was a dealer demo vehicle and had about 4k on it. The dealer gave me a decent deal on it so I pulled the trigger. I'm at just about 5.1k on the factory fill and I bought oil and a filter at Wally World. I was going to go with Magnatec 5W-30 but they didn't have it in stock, so I ended up buying 2 5 quart jugs of Edge EP. Stupid me did not read the bottles (even though they were one behind the other and I assumed they were the same thing) but I bought different formulations, I'm guessing. One bottle says for up to 15k miles and the other says up to 20k. Either way, this is going to be a short 5k run before I start extending the drain intervals. I bought an FL-500S filter and noticed that it was made here, in USA. I buy the FL-910S for my Fusion and Escape and those are made in Mexico. It's nice to see that these are made here.

Is that the deep burgundy? Looks nice. Good vehicle, hope it serves you well. Explorer was in the running for me awhile back.

kstanf150, I am hoping so. I have been doing 7.5k oci on my Ecoboost Fusion with Motorcraft FS. I've been trying different oils to see how they compare using UOA.

max, I thought the worst offender was the 820S. I've used the 910S and the 400S with zero tears. I'll be using this filter until I find a tear.

Blueskies123, haha I was thinking the same thing. Glad another car couldn't park on the other side or I wouldn't have been able to fit.

Does that mean you promise to cut it open?

I have run that SAME exact Purolator filter on a 4.6 (not in a motorcraft label) and it didn't tear.

Linctex, I'll definitely cut it open and I'll be cutting open the factory filter tomorrow after the oil change. Not sure if they use the same 500S from the factory. I have used the 820S on my sister's 2008 4.6L Explorer but I've never cut that one open. It's better than the filters that Mavis Tire has put on for her in the past. She doesn't know the difference and after over 108k miles, the engine is still running well with no issues ATM.

Congrats! That's a beautiful SUV that I hope serves you well for many years. I would have no qualms using using either, the filter or oil.
