Technical service bulletin (TSB) - 09-015-04 and 09-013-04 - says: “Vehicles with the Multiple Displacement System must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the MDS.”

Wrangers do not have "Multiple Displacement" Engines! In other words "Variable cylinders". This is why forums need to be taken with a grain of salt as they say.

I have the same engine in our '07 Chrysler Town & Country. I did try Mobil 1 5W-20 in it, once, and left it in for a few hundred miles. The engine was real noisy on that. I drained it and put some Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 in it and it was much quieter, though still not perfect. It runs excellent on Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20. I'm currently running a stash of Havoline DS 5w30 though it (mostly from my recently sold '07 Corolla). I like the Havoline for this application because it's already a thin 5w30, so in service, it's likely down into the 20 weight grade before long anyway. Plus, I can feel the engine more on 5W-20 compared with 5w30. There's a touch more "refinement" with 5w30.

This is a good engine that will last you a long time. It has a good torque curve and is quiet and smooth. It doesn't have quite the low-end bias that the old 4.0L did, but in my opinion, the 3.8L has so many other benefits that the point is rather moot. The 4.0L has a steller reputation for reliability, but I think you'll find that the 3.8L will age extremely well also. This is the second engine of this type I've had (first was the 3.3L in a 2003 Grand Caravan) and we haven't had a lick of trouble out of either engine.

Veering OT slightly, it's just a shame that Jeep didn't even make an attempt to keep a straight 6. They should've taken some hints from BMW as they have kept the inline alive and well. The lack of any engine options other than the 3.8 in the JK is the only reason I haven't bought one yet. lol

I do believe the Wrangler will soon be getting the new 3.6L Pentastar V6. Thats 280HP and quite a bit of torque- should be more than sufficient for the wrangler.

I'm hoping they offer the Phoenix/Pentastar engines in the Liberty as well. I'm thinking of getting another one in 2012 or 2013.

The problem with the I-6 was emissions, I have a 300 I-6 in a Ford van and think it was the best engine Ford ever offered in a 6 cyl.

thanks for buying chrysler product, i work at a supplier...i think i would use 10-30 in a 4 by 4 in summer

You could run MC 5-20 semi-syn for whatever interval you wish. And it is like 11.50 at wal-mart per 5 quarts.

Not only emissions, but stricter front end crash safety standards too. Its much easier to put in bigger crumple zones with a shorter engine. I've also heard theories that since the 4.0's had been built for so long, a lot of the tooling was wearing out too. I would have loved to see a modern version of it though, maybe with overhead cams, or at the very least a "crossflow" head. Or better yet, the diesel they get over in europe

Went ahead and changed the oil at 2470 miles with Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic and a Purolator Pure One filter. The M1 did not make the engine any louder so that's good

Also added a bugscreen to the grille (yeah I know, big mod huh? lol)

Nice Jeep. I used to have a 2000. Unfortunately I had the 4 not six and it wasn't a great engine. Glad they dropped the 4. Enjoy.
Mobil 1 5W-20 is a very fine oil and better than many 5-30 out there.

I've gone back and forth a couple of times from Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1 5w-20, and heard no difference in sound. I ran one OCI with Mobil 1 0w-20, and still heard no additional noise. I've settled in with Mobil 1 5w-20 for the last couple rounds and will probably stick with it. After a little over 40k miles, I'm very happy with this engine and transmission. (6spd manual).

I have the same engine in my 2010 grand cherokee but am using Mobil 1 0w20. Is this fine or should I switch back to 5w20.

Thanks

I have the same engine in my 2006 Town & Country and I have been using Mobil 1 0W-20. It runs very well with this oil and it is approved for use in engines that require 5W-20, so it is fine to keep running it. Operating temperature thickness is the same as 5W-20, it is just a thinner oil at start-up temperatures.

Mobil 1 0W-20 is a good oil.

I also use Mobil 1 0w30 in my 3.7L KJ with good results.
