Hello,
New member, been searching/reading for a couple of hours now.... and I can not find what I am looking for.

I have a new 2.0 DOHC motor being built for my 1999 neon.
What oil should I use to break in the new engine?
(new rings/maybe pistons/honed block)
What oil should I use after the break in, or if it is the same....

Neon engines use/eat oil. I currently have been using M1 - 5w30 - changing after about 8K - but I have to add every 1K or so on my current engine with 142K, but the engine runs good yet.
My wifes 2000 Nissan also has been using M1 with good results, changing around 7500 also.
Went with M1 cause I thought it was good, finding out here that it is not the preferred brand.

So to summarize - I would like some help with
break in oil - kind/brand
long term oil (want to stay with Sythetic)
What filter to use?

The oil/filter brand will apply to both cars, if that matters.

Just my 2 cents, in my experience re-ringing is seldom successful. If I were goin' to the expense of rebuild I would rebore/new pistons. After rebuild use the Motoman break-in and dino oil (maybe Delo 400). After break-in (1,000 miles or so) you can go to synthetic if the mood strikes you.

Mobil 1 is fine, it suffers from a recently perceived cheapening or fall from grace.

If you find a forum (like allpar.com) specific to your neon you can see the typical oil burning trouble spots. If it's like saturns or the newer corollas, they put low-tension rings in at the factory for economy reasons that loose their "springiness", gum up, and let oil by. So a re-ring might yet cure what ails you. But you need to see if, say, your cylinder wall wear is out of line and if you need machining and oversized pistons as a cure. Naturally you can't predict with absoulute certainty what your car's problem is but you can spot trends that might apply.

From the Amsoil site:

1999 DODGE NEON 2.0L 4-cyl Engine Code Y DOHC

Engine Oil
Grade 1......API*
Series 2000 Synthetic 0w30 Motor Oil
SAE 5w30 Synthetic Motor Oil
SAE 10w30 Synthetic Motor Oil
SAE 5w30 XL Synthetic Motor Oil
Above -9°F......10W-30
Below 100°F......5w30[1]
1. SAE 5w30 is preferred.
Amsoil says and warranties you can use their oil immediately in new and rebuilt engines. Looks like you drive about 18,000 miles in a year, so I'd recommend their 5W30 25,000 mile normal/15,000 mile severe driving/1 year whichever occurs first oil and the EaO57 oil filter with the same change requirements, if the rebuilt engine has the same oil requirements as a new engine. The EaA81 air filter is available for your car and I suggest using this for better engine performance and long life. You can purchase all of these and have them delivered to your door in a few days by using a site sponsored Amsoil dealer.

My motor is at a reputable machine shop currently - dont have the measurements back yet but coming soon, this motor will be honed/bored/new pistons/new good rings as necessary to make it as good as new/better.

What oil filter is a good with Synthetic oil.
What synthetic is best in 5w30.

So use regular oil for 1000 then switch to synthetic?
What is the "Motoman break-in"?

thanks Kevin

Sorry Tim, posted a head of you, thanks.

2000 Nissan Altima - It also is a 2 liter I believe.

Any other oils/filters besides Amsoil?

From the Amsoil website:

2000 NISSAN/DATSUN ALTIMA 2.4L 4-cyl Engine Code KA24DE

Engine Oil
Grade 1......API*
Series 2000 Synthetic 0w30 Motor Oil
SAE 5w30 Synthetic Motor Oil
SAE 5w30 XL Synthetic Motor Oil
Series 3000 Synthetic 5w30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil
Above 0°F......10W-30, 10W-40
All Temps......5w30[1]
1. SAE 5w30 is preferred.
EaO13 and EaA74 would be the best oil and air filter for this car.

"Any other oils/filters beside Amsoil?"
I'm not sure what other oil companies recommend for breaking in. Best to contact them. My second choice for oil would be Mobil 1 EP as it seems to place second to Amsoil in the comparisons I've seen. The EP is warranted for 15,000 miles normal driving or whatever your owners manual specifies for severe driving. They also make a pretty good oil filter, but pretty far behind Amsoil in filtration and change intervals.

Why the hesitancy with Amsoil? Let your fingers do the walking.

Have a Neon 96 with 127K on it, and it burns no oil at all.
had the head gasket replaced at 82K. Was leaking then, ha.

Use PP 5w30 but used Havoline before that.
Use Purolator Prem filters

There's the best answer thus far!!!!.... Havoline for the next 100K or-so.... then switch to Platinum. Purolator Premium Plus, Motorcraft or Supertech are the best bunch of inexpensive filters found easily. Want to buy online?.... buy the NAPA Golds - sometimes under $4 from fleetfilter.com

Hello.

I service my girlfriends 2000 plymouth neon with the dohc motor.

Vehicle has about 74k, I have been using Walmart Supertech oil and filters with good results. I use 5w30.

It uses about 1/4 of one quart per 4000 miles.
