Never Worry About Oil Again

My 09 Matrix is Dual VVTi and as someone mentioned here and over on Toyotanation the VVT can be/is affected by the oil (I think was related to oil pressure). Mine calls for 5 or 0w20, my wifes CRV calls for 5w30. For me I tend to mix and match oils depending on what's available in my cupboard, although when my dealer did the first OCI and used 5w30 in my Matrix I immediately noticed a couple of differences that I didn't like, engine noise and seemed to be slower. So after 2k I changed it back to a 20w. PP5w20 to be specific.

I'm getting ready to do the CRV oil change today, gotta run...

That's what the local tire shop seems to believe too. They fill every gas engine they service with Kendall GT-1 10w-30, regardless of whether it takes 5w-20, 5w-30 or 10w-30.

Also consider northern Canada in the middle of winter.
A 0 or 5 cold viscosity would be more appealing.

The more I see on this board the more it seems..oil is oil. You could have a stash of 10 different oil brands from 0W-20 to 10W-40. You could blindfold yourself and pick any 4 or 5 containers and everything would be fine.

Having said that..I think it has been shown that 10W has not shown better oil analysis than 5W even if the oil shears back to low 8 cST.

I use 5W oil in everything including my lawnmower.

10w-40 semi syn MC oil for bikes,10w-30 M1 EP syn for lawn mower,oem spec 5w-20PP for car. I like to do it right.

Drew gt, Your correct the wrong oil will effect the vvt operation.The vvt is similar to a set of Rhodes lifters,If you have a high lift cam the Rhode lifters will make the engine more streetable at lower rpm's.Which basically does not let the valves open all the way until the rpm's increase.

Only if you use a block heater in winter. I'm mixing my own 5w25 at the moment, because I have a new Subaru, which calls for a 5w30 in the manual. Otherwise I normally mix 50:50 synthetic and dino 5w30 in winter. It makes a real difference when it's below zero F. the 10w30 just doesn't get up into the top of the engine when it's cold. Ford started making 5w30 the oil of choice years ago when they demonstrated how this helped the engine life. If you live somewhere where it doesn't go below freezing very much, and you're normally driving 20-30 minutes at least, the 10w30 might be satisfactory, if you drive the engine hard. Otherwise the hot viscosity of 5w30 and 10w30 is the same, you're just talking about shear stability and oil longevity. (I think).

If I had to go with only one grade and brand of oil in all of my various engines it would be GC Castrol Syntec 0W30.

If oil cost was an issue I would go with PP 5W30 or YB 5W30.

my buddy down the street from me has the same attitude, he has a fork lift repair buiss and he never has oil worries. he gets rotella 40 weight and adds oil only to his work truck he has had since new 1993, I happened to look under the hood one day cause he had a starting issue, batt connection, the man didnt even have an air filter housing on his 300cid six banger, and by the looks of the throttle body he hadn't had one on for a few years.
when we got it started it blew out blowby from the valve cover.

I'd say if you have to stock only one grade, 5w30 would be it. Gone are the days that people worry 5w30 will shear but 10w30 will not, now the 5w30 are made to meet SM spec with more shear stable base stock so no longer a problem.
