Never change oil?

Mobil 1 5w30 is actually one of the thicker SN/GF-5 30 grades.

Whenever somebody has a noise problem or a consumption problem, it usually involves Mobil 1 in either 5w30 or 10w30 grade. But then again, there are those who use it and have no problems whatsoever. Weird.

Well, I can never tell the difference in noise unless something is really amiss, or it's a -40 start, or so forth. People can accuse Mobil 1 5w30 SN/GF-5 of being noisy. They may be right, they might be off. But, it's definitely not on the thin side of things for SN/GF-5 5w30s (or even in comparison to 10w30s).

To me, my 5w-40 sounds exactly the same as the Pennzoil Conventional did. Either that, or I'm tone deaf.

That's news to me, and probably a lot of other members here. Can you provide data to back that up? Thanks.

OP-I think if you went to Chrysler complaining they'll tell you its normal unfortunately. If it isn't leaking aside from changing the PCV valve, checking valve stem seals, and trying different brands and grades of oil there isn't much you can do. Tearing down and a rebuild would be the only other choice, or live with it. That kind of oil use would drive me nuts.

I bet you could top off every 1,000 miles, drain the oil and filter every 15K miles and the engine would live a long live. Use something like a Mobil 1 filter or similar.

Currently, I am using Napa Gold filters (Wix). If i do a 15k oci, i may switch to Napa Platinum, Bosch Distance Plus, or another "synthetic" type fillter. Any other filter suggestions?

My Mobil mix was 3 quarts 5w30 and 2 quarts 10w30. Next oci, i will use up the remainder (2 qts 5w30, 3 qts 10w30). By then, i should have a good indication as to whether the consumption will subside.

If not, i will probably switch to SuperTech Full Synthetic and 5-6k oci's or stick with Mobil 1 or a Pennzoil Full Synthetic and 15k oci's. I have used Pennzoil Platinum extensively on my previous van and it currently has 180k miles. Between the two, it will depend on which one is cheapest.

Could you possibly use a 40 weight oil to slow down consumption?

My moms Rubicon has that engine and it burns about 1 quart every 2500 miles with 5w20. I just add when needed.

My buddy has an old GC, maybe a '95? - he uses SuperTech synthetic and changes at 18k - he adds 4-5 qts during the interval. Uses a cheap Walmart Purolator for the entire OCI. That van is still going - pushing 300k miles now. The engine is so quiet, it's hard to tell if it's even running.

You may be correct on that one, or at least partially. Synthetic oil did seem to drastically reduce the consumption in my 2005 Grand Caravan with the 3.8 engine. IMHO, synthetics offer two advantages. One is long drain intervals. The second is good cold flow properties.

If consumption does not subside with the synthetics, there is one advantage down the drain. South Dakota has seen some very bitter temps this year. So, I do not discount the benefit of the cold flow properties of synthetic.

That said, it comes down to cost. If the current consumption does not subside, I agree that it would be a waste to use Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum motor oils. The next logical choice would be to use SuperTech or Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic with 5k-6k oci's. Those two options offer prices comparable to conventional motor oils and the cold flow properties that I feel are important.

[censored] are you constantly babbling on about? Mobil 1 5w30 is actually thicker than most equivalent weights at temp.

Personally, this consumption would drive me mad. I'd second the option to consider trading it if you can.

If that doesn't work then switch to Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 or 10w30/40 and run it out for a 15K OCI using a top tier filter. I think adding old lets you extend OCI's, but there still are contaminants that may build up after awhile IMHO.

Have you had this checked out?

No. This is a known "problem" with Dodge/Chrysler vans. My 2005 did experience some usage as well, but not as extreme. I was able to minimize the consumption on the 2005 with the use of synthetic motor oil. Consumption dropped from .75 qts/1200 miles to about .5 qts/2000 miles. That was acceptable.

I was hoping that the Chrysler consumption would be reduced with the use of synthetic motor oil. That does not look like it will be the case.

Chrysler considers 1 qt/1000 miles to be "normal".

Does this have the lifetime power train warranty and do you intend to keep it for awhile?

If so I would use the cheapest oil that meets the spec for the longest OCI allowed.

If not I would use cheap 5w30 conventional and top off with 15w40 in the spring/summer and dump in the fall.

How many miles do you drive on average?

I will have to keep this one for some time. Vehicle averages about 20k per year, depending on how much traveling we do out of state to see family.

It does not have the lifetime powertrain warranty. The consumption is annoying, but I am not concerned about the longevity of the engine.

At the current rate of consumption, I will just have to modify my habits and change oil sooner with conventional or cheap synthetic or go much longer oci's with name brand full synthetics.

I am leaning towards 6k-7k OCI's with SuperTech full synthetic or whatever conventional I can find at a decent price (Pennzoil conventional, TropArtic, Motorcraft).

If that is the case I would just do spring/Fall changes with a good filter. 15w40 in the summer, 5W30 in the winter.
