Networked setup get "Page Not Found" occassionally

We have 3 networked computers at home that run to an Actiontec wireless router and a 2wire DSL modem. All PC's running XP home.

A few times per day we'll get the "page not found" disconnect, like something has timed out.

The modem shows all 3 lights green and steady, so I wonder if it's the modem.

All 3 computers will get the "page not found" at the same time.

I've reset the router back to original settings and it still does it. This setup used to work flawlessly for about 8 months. Then it started having the issue. I don't know what's been changed. I don't recall anything in particular.

If I unplug the modem ethernet cable and plug it back in, it seems to reset whatever it's doing and works again.

Also, if we just wait, it will fix itself again as well.

All suggestions would be appreciated.

You can do the following:

1)ICMP monitoring by means of pinging.

In all 3 machines, you launch 2 command prompt sessions.One is set to continuously ping outside IP (e.g. http://www.novell.com) and another one is set to continuously ping inside IP (e.g. your router, which is commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and then when it fails, compare the 2.

If when pinging outside world fails but pinging the router goes on, it's probably your ISP, ISP-side of the router/routing, your DSL modem or your WAN port side of the router at fault.

If pinging both outside and inside fails at the exact moment, your Actiontec router is bunk.

(*and don't be surprised if any of those cheep wireless routers would fail on you suddenly for I had my fair share of frustration with D-link, etc. I'm now using WRT54GL linux version exclusively to alleviate an intermittent connectivity issue in my father in-law's place*)

Try a program call "Network Magic". It has a free trial. It's great for monitoring your home network. It will tell you when your internet connection is down and offer to fix it for you.

I am assuming the 3 computers are on the wireless network.

I have had similar issues in the past. The wireless network will go down for a few seconds, and I only have a theory about it. It's possible that a neighbor has a cordless phone that sometimes interferes with the wireless network.

My remedy has been to try different channels and find one that is more stable.

Civic, 3 computers are all hard-wired to router.

However, I do have an old laptop (4th computer) that I use occassionally but it's the only one that's wireless.

Quest, I don't know how to ping anything. I know what it is and I've seen it done, but I don't know the actual protocol.

I did download and buy Network Magic and it seems like a good utility. So far, no "page not displayed" errors.

I'm also gonna download the free Network Magic...although i really don't have any problems...my wireless would VERY rarely disconnect, and i just hit "repair" (windows) and it fixes it...
(I still don't know if that is my wireless router or the actual internet connection from the ISP to the DSL modem that is "disconnecting")

ONE QUESTION:
can this software be used on an existing, already setup network? when i tried to install the software it said it needs to "configure my network" or something like that...I don't need it...it's already set up...i just need to monitor it, etc..

My network was already configured when I installed it. I think it just takes inventory of what's hooked up and then will suggest better fixes if it sees some.

So far, no "page not displayed" screens.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, wife is getting the page not found screen but only when uploading two or more photos, or when she tries to view friend's blogs on myspace.

She doesn't have these problems when her computer is connected directly to the modem but only when going through the new actiontec router. The router is a FiOS one but so was the other one we used to have and we had no issues with it. Also, we have Norton Utilities through AT&T if that makes any difference.

Upgrade the firmware on the router, there could be an issue with the connection to the modem. Check on the manufacturer's website for the file and instructions to install it.

I had an issue with my new D-Link router, and once I updated the firmware, the problem went away. It would either drop all together and reset, or it'd drop the connection from Comcast.

I did that on the old router and no-go but I'll try it on the new one as soon as I can get access to it.

It's giving me this....

"No more than 5 sessions at a time are allowed. Please wait until open sessions expire."

Weird! Never had that happen before. Of course, I don't "log out" either.
