Network Password Change

Hi all,

I have a wireless router and due to a safety concern I changed my network's password. I often connect with a wireless handheld device to my computer. After changing the password, I expected that my handheld device would prompt me to enter the new password, but instead it simply connected. Am I mixing up the network password with the WEP Key? If so, how do I find out the WEP Key? Should I have changed the WEP Key instead of the network password, since my concern was in regard to other people possibly being able to connect to my network? I believe I am using WPA2, if that makes any difference.

If you are using WPA2, then you don't have a WEP key

You have a WPA passphrase most likely (unless you are using RADIUS).


It indeed sounds like you may have just changed the password on the router, instead of the passphrase on the wireless. I'd go back into the router, go to the wireless settings and find where it specifies the passphrase/pre-shared key, and replace that.

It is good that you use WPA or WPA2 rather than WEP. WEP is very weak.

Yes, you should change the wireless key rather than the one you changed. The one you used would be the key that a connected computer would use to change the router setup, including wireless key.

Hi again,

Everything appears to be working fine. One unsolved mystery remains. In my notes from a few years ago, when I first set up the wifi connection, I find another password for BASE CONF. I wonder what this Base Configuration means? Any ideas?
