I had given him some PP 5W-40 (part of free oil I got from Drivers Club) for his 06 Volkswagen. He used 3 qts and then added another 3 M1 5w30 he had left over from his other vehicles. I told him it should be OK for 5,000 miles..Was I correct in my comment to him? TIA

Would not be my best mix but don't worry.

You are fine with your comment.

Take care, bill

I hope his engine doesn't blow up.

(Not that it has anything to do with the oil mixture, but it's always good to hope someone's engine doesn't blow up, right?)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

It will be fine and surely good for far more then 5000 miles!!! I would not hesitate to run it for 10,000 miles or what ever his normal OCI is!Both M1 and PP are good products. Their is nothing about mixing them that is going to deminish their ability to protect that engine. Sure the 5W30 is a bit thin compared to a solid 5W40 but again all will be fine!

5,000 should be no problem.
The oils are not fighting each other in there - similar graded oils [like SM] HAVE to mix and work together.

Eddie we have not seen any mixing when outside additives are left alone that has resulted in anything less then a good to great UOA. So as long as the oil are SJ or better it's always good.

Won't hurt anything .I used up 4 qts of 5w20 shell oil and 2 Quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 that was given to me both sm rated and I am not in the least worried. Oil is oil there are only a handfull of additive makers and they use the same stuff ,the amounts are different but it is close enough to be fine.

With a normally aspirated 2.5L (I assume the 2.5L VW 5-cyl), and a rather large oil capacity (6.0 L oil sump), the oils should hold up quite well in that engine and oil capacity combination. I would have no problem running even a conventional SM oil out to 7k miles.

With all high quality synthetics (M1 + PP), I think you could run it quite a bit longer than 5k miles. Running the manufacturer OCI of 10k miles should be fine.

Your Mobil-Platinum mix sounds interesting -- won't hurt a thing doing a sensible OCI length.

I would also love to see a 7-8K UOA of these two oils together.

I think we should just close the board down in favour of picking oils out with a blindfold after being spun around in the oils isle. Well, maybe not....I even know to at least feel for all the bottles being the same shape. (rolls eyes)

engine won't be able to tell the difference. I've used different brands of oil for top up many times.
