I recently purchased a used Pontiac Grand Am with 3.4L V6 engine. When the intake manifold gasket was replaced the mechanic noticed a lot of varnish on the engine components. He stated that it did not look like the previous owner changed the oil too often. Is there a good oil to use to help clean the engine? I plan to do the 3K mile oil changes regularly.

Yes. Do the following:
1) Run Pennzoil conventional for 3k oci's.
2) Throw in some Auto Rx to get it nice and clean.
3) Use a good non-fram filter; Wix, M1 Extended Perf., etc.
4) Use sea-foam in the brake booster line and MMO in the gas.
5) Think of Techron Fuel injector cleaner in a few tanks.
6) Drain sump 1 qt, add MMO 300 miles before you dump it.

Auto-RX it...
Auto-Rx, then maintenance dose of Auto-rx thereafter with regular or High Mileage oil of your choice.
RX if you want to do it right. Takes some time and more money....

I think Castrol GTX cleaned out whatever Kendall and the PO of my 86 302 left behind. the 10w30 GTX would get dark black by 800-1000 miles, and I'd just change it out early every 1000-1500, until I am where I am now... 3000 miles and still not even close to black. More like golden. That an a Motorcraft FL1A filter. I've put 12,000 miles on it since I've got it, and the oil stays cleaner longer now, so I think it did get some 'dirt' out.

I disagree... their extended guard looks to be avery good filter.. Used to be called the X2 I think and come in a can..
You know its a good filter when they shrink wrap it to prevent idiots from switching it to a cheaper box.. I missed the can, it was good for old filters so it wouldn't leak.

Drive it clean over the next 200k miles. Best would be to never stop. Just keep going.

Run appropriate OCI's with the ARX maintennance dose unit happy with the cleanliness.
