Wow!

- It's hard for us to give advice because we don't have ALL the required info. IE, does your B vent go into a mortar chimney or is the B vent your only chimney.

- You need to find a knowledgeable trades person. I do lots of diy stuff at my work and I find it very difficult to get good trades people when I need them...you are not alone.

- Don't let some of the comments here make you disregard the potential outcome of CO leaks....I know someone that was MINUTES away from death from a CO leak. At the same time, don't flip out....just get it resolved.

- Here is a source you probably don't want to take the time to study:

http://www.hartandcooley.com/vent/sizing%20guides/Gas%20vent,%20chimney%20sizing%20&%20application%20guide.pdf

...It "recommends"(doesn't prohibit) not using single wall connectors into B vent.

...While some reducing can be used in some instances, "with 4 inch "connector" you should NOT go to 3 inch B vent.

...Your install with a elbow to horizontal directly out of the heater is "least desirable" for good priming and venting.

FIND SOME GOOD HELP, SOME HOW. CALL YOUR GAS UTILITY COMPANY FOR A START.

Do you have 6 inch clearance to combustibles with your single wall??

Think of Sears/Home Depot contractors the same way you think of a flat-rate dealer tech or low-bid contracts.

Holy foil tape! I'd call a local sheet metal contractor ASAP. That does not look good in my eyes.

I have a top notch HVAC guy coming over tomorrow who deals with my company. He is coming over to discuss the negative pressure in my cellar when the furnace turns on but he also knows a thing or 2 about sheet metal and flues etc...hopefully he can square away this mess.

I am going to contact Sears at some point and let them know I am going to dispute the charge on my CC. I understand I need to pay for the WH and the expansion tank and the 120 dollars they charged me because I live in a condo??? (something about insurance for the plumber because if something goes wrong during install more places could be damaged????) I'm going to pursue getting refunded the 300 dollar installation charge because after 3 weeks and 2 plumber contractors and a Sears technician my WH system is still messed up and this last one was a biggy...now I'm having to pay out of my pocket to have an independent come in and fix Sears plumbers mess. There is no way in heck that I am gonna roll the Sears dice again and hope I get someone competent.... I have taken plenty of pictures if they want to see what I am talking about and I have a feeling I'm going to need them.

Wouldn't you think showing them the above picture that they would sorta get the idea on the type of plumbers they are sending out to peoples houses???

I'm not sure how successful I'll be but worth a shot

Wish me luck fellahs

The original A/C in my house was a Sears. I am assuming the abysmal workmanship was done by their installers. Sounds like little has changed in the last 30-40 years.

Sears has traditionally gone to the lowest bidder. They're effectively a finance company. The store and the products are a means to use that finance company. They're props.

My mother had a boiler replaced by them. There was nothing wrong (too much) with the install. The boiler cost about a grand more than it should (installed) and the salesman took the deposit saying, with a warm smile, "You're smart people. It's AC season now. Most people wait until heating season when all of my installers are servicing units". I had to call about 4 times after 3 months expired and no install. He was just holding on to "money in the bank" while grabbing any other jobs that he'd stacked up in the mean time. Basically overbooking to get while the getting was good and just handling all the complaints in as negligently as he could manage.

Fast forward to a promotion that they had for gutters. Some totally great price per foot. The same clown came out (this was years later) ..measured ..and submitted an estimate of something like $5000. I laughed when he called to confirm the job. I got a questionnaire in the mail asking why I didn't choose Sears. I told them the truth. They hire lying thieves for sales people that quote 3X the market rate for the services performed.
