need to change oil!

have a 2011 ram with a 5.7 hemi. since i can't get penzoil ultra anymore , i am considering amsoil signature series with a KN white filter, the one with nut on it. any thoughts on this? tks all
 
It's a fine setup but overkill. Pennzoil Platinum with the K&N filter would be much cheaper and is run on specials at places like Oreillys sometimes.

If your running Amsoil Signature, you should only be using it to extended your OCI, but your probably under warranty so your throwing money down the drain with Signature series.
 
Are you under warranty? If not, are you trying to extend drains? Do you use it as a truck or as a butt hauler?

A member recently posted UOA's on there Hemi running PP out to 10k if I remember correctly, he has several UOA'S with the same oil and it looked really good. PP could be a nice less expensive option for you.
No question Amsoil would work great as well.
 
That's a fine combo if you're extending your OCI a bit. If under warranty, the OE/XL line would be a better choice.
 
I would just go with Pennzoil Platinum and get a UOA done after a couple of OCI's. That would be a good oil for your application and you would continue to use a brand you currently trust.

Agreed. My hemi ran fine on everything I put in it.
Op. if you are into a warranty then I suggest pyb 5w-20. It's a great oil and is more than capable to run out the warranty specified interval. Once warranty has expired I would then use a synthetic and stretch out the mileage.
And before anyone even considers saying syn will make the engine last longer,or the peace of mind absurdity my hemi had almost 280000 in it when I totalled it last month. That truck had records for every single service performed.
Before I bought it the original owner(I was the second owner) had dealer oil changes using bulk 5w-20 conventional and he followed the manuals arrive schedule to the letter. That hemi with that mileage could still shred the tires,it pulled my fox body across the country as well as towed a 4000 pound loader dump trailer and it consumer no noticeable oil between changes and the internals were spotless.
How do I know the innards were clean. Because when I first bought it I used the lubro-moly idle engine flush,and brand new oil. I wanted to gauge how dirty it was by how dark the oil became once the flush did its thing.
After 25 minutes at idle the oil came out as clean as it went in,which tells me the idle flush had nothing to clean.
My hemi would just start blackening the oil by 5000kms and those miles included countless hours at idle going from site to site.
So don't fool yourself into believing you are doing your motor any favours by using a syn and dumping it at the warranty specified intervals.
Even towing the oil isn't being subjected to any real stress. That hemi has an oil cooler the size of a modern 4 cylinder radiator,so the oil is always being returned to its optimum operating temp.
So using a syn a warranty intervals does nothing more than cleaning out your wallet faster. My hemi proved to me that no gains were realized for the extra cost.
Only a fool believes that they are doing the motor a favour and their engine will last longer,it's just a fools errand.
Use a conventional known for cleaning,change it at the warranty recommended interval and once your warranty is over use a syn and extend the interval. It's just that simple.
My hemi is the best running truck in the junkyard running conventional almost it's entire life. I used syns last winter to ease start up.
I would place a wager that if you ran a syn for 5000,and then a conventional for 5000 you would NOT be able to tell which was which by looking at the numbers.
Anyone wanna take my bet. PayPal........
 
AAP is selling an oil change special with 5.1qt. Castrol Edge SPT and K&N HP Filter (white can with nut). Cost is $29. Running in the Mazda now.
 
How about Napa Synthetic? It is on sale for $3.49 per quart this month. It is rebranded Synpower.

Does your truck have an OLM?

Amsoil will work fine, and a few people on BITOG sell it and can hook you up.

If you're under warranty then use dino at the recommended interval. If you're not, but insist on synthetic, I'd save some coin and use PP, QSUD, or Napa Syn (when on sale).
