Need suggestions for garage lighting

I'm upgrading the light in my 20x22 garage. It had nothing but two incandescent bulbs when I moved in; just terrible. I removed them and installed two 8' fluorescent T8 fixtures (uses 4 4' tubes) in the middle of the garage where the old incandescent fixtures were. It is a million times better and brighter, although I admit the location is not conducive for underhood work. I don't regret it though; the initial plan was to install those two fixtures, and possibly add more fixtures if I found it necessary. They do an excellent job of lighting up the whole general area of the garage. Instant on at full brightness, except in colder weather, it's slightly dimmer than usual until they warm up. I just need to add some additonal task and area lighting that's focused on some specific areas. I added a hanging shop light above the workbench. For now, it's a junky old 4 ft T12 fixture that I already had. I will eventually upgrade it to another T8 or possibly LED fixture. I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to get better underhood light yet. I'm thinking maybe some wall mounted adjustable floods, so I can aim them wherever I need.

Right now I'm focused on installing the subpanel in the garage, so I can power said additional lights as well as more outlets, which I need badly. I'll figure out the rest of the lighting later.

Like said, 4ft T8 fixtures with cold start ballasts would be the most lighting for your dollar. Try to avoid the cheap 4ft T12 shop lights if you go this route.

The home centers all carry 4ft LED fixtures now, but you could by several cold start T8s for the same cost. Eventually LED will take over.

I've got a mixture of awful T12s, some decent screw-in LEDs and a high press sodium and mercury vapor over-head fixtures to fire-up separately if needed.

Costco has a lot of LED lighting for ok prices. As was said CREE 100w equivelent bulbs make a lot of light. 2 of them in the garage opener. They also have 4' LED florescent replacements and also LED portable shop lights that are I think 250w.

I've started using 4 foot led shop lights that I buy at Sam's Club. They just went down in price to $35 each. They put out a lot of light and work great even in the coldest temperatures. Each light has a pull chain. I am really happy with them. The fluorescent units don't work well in the winter in my unheated garage.

Every room and area in your home deserves a good lighting, and so as your garage. It adds a curb appeal to your home. getting all your fixtures installed by a good electrical services NJ is a better idea as they know what kind of lights are perfect for your specific room.
