Need opinion on a used car purchase

If it were me and it wasn't going to be a DD I'd get it and repair the rear end or just replace from a junker. I'd just make a toy out of it and go with that. But if it's to be a vehicle for reliable transportation... Idk if I'd get it.
A 260K mile Expedition in drivable condition is worth maybe $1500.
This one isn't worth over scrap value needing that much work. Scrap value is about $500 because they are so heavy.
A coworker of mine just bought a non-running '99 Expedition for $100 today. No kidding, $100. He's going to drag it across the scales.

Does the low mileage engine and transmission increase its value any or do they not override the fact it will need tons of other work e.g. suspension which appears to be original (and should be very expensive to fix)
Not really. They might make it slightly more desirable as a parts vehicle, but that's about it. It's still realistically worth about $500.

Ditto here. I think this will be turn into a money pit and you should look for something that will get better fuel mileage.

1.1K is not much for anything that runs and drives.
When you say it needs a rear end, can you drive it with it making noise or the thing can't be driven?
If it's just noisy, you could probably drive it while awaiting a salvage yard rear end.
Heavy, but not difficult to R&R as an assembly.
The shocks are cheap and should be easy.
Just put a wrench on each end and break the bolts if they won't come loose.
If the newer engine and transmission are documented, then this might be a worthwhile project.
Just bear in mind that it will be a rolling project and not a turn-key daily driver.
It might not take a whole lot to make this old Expy into a useable daily driver as long as you're willing and able to wrench it yourself.

The fact that it has needed all these things replaced speaks volumes as to the lack of upkeep the vehicle has seen. Steer well away from it, it sounds like it is a nightmare.
Already a lot of money spent and it still needs more, spend more for shocks , rear end and so forth and its still a rusty 98 model.
You will be throwing good money after bad.

So nobody thinks the newish engine, transmission and other parts can be sold for a profit?
It cannot be driven.
The owner says they have a $1100 offer for it but they will honor a $1000 price for me.
