Here is one Texas Department of Public Safety purchasing list from 2004 that includes AMSOIL for $154,000. That would be about $44 per vehicle per year which sounds about right.

$44/yr per vehicle wouldn't cover 3500 DPS vehicles. But in any event, the Texas DPS does use it. I also found out that they use both 5w30 ASL and 5w20 XLM, and Amsoil ATF.

Yeah, the $44 a year sounds low, but noticed that was only up to October 15. Add a few more months and at that rate it becomes $53. If their cost was $4 a quart back then that would be enough for 60,000 miles. I think they immediately drain the factory ATF, refill with AMSOIL ATF and never touch it again for their use of the car.

I also found out the main reason they use Amsoil is for extended drain capabilities, not that it's going to magically extend the life of the vehicles. It's pure economics according to my sources. Watch for them to switch to the 0-5w20 extended drain version when it becomes available.

You're right - pure economics. I hear they are getting better gas mileage and less wear than when they used to change every 2000-3000 miles with petroleum oil. And probably more time to issue more tickets! I would think that would relate to longer vehicle life, but I haven't heard if they keep their vehicles any longer.

The same you get that with any quality synthetic. The original Federally funded tests were run with Royal Purple.
