Need info on Mercon V spec's

For Mercon V, ATF to meet the standards for viscosity, does the ATF have to be a semi-synthetic or full synthetic? Or could the Mercon V classification be used for mineral oils?

I think Mercon V was basically a friction modifier update of Mercon to work better with the torque convert lock up clutches Ford used beginning the the 90's.
 
I thought Mercon V was by definition a semi-synthetic. Could be a synthetic too I suppose, but I don't a mineral oil would meet spec.
 
The reason I asked the question was when I looked at the PDS for Havoline Mercon V the viscosity index is 191. (which alludes to the use of a lot of synthetic in the base stock)

When I looked at the PDS for Havoline Multi-Vehicle ATF the viscosity index is only 164.

Both are backwards compatible with the old Dexron/Mercon ATF.

So, answering my question, if your vehicle calls for the older DexronIII or Mercon ATF....IMO....it would be more beneficial to use the forward compatible Havoline Mercon V rather than the Havoline Multi-Vehicle ATF?

This is a good question mongo.

My dd also is spec'd to run on Mercon V for the AT.
I usually enjoy the partial drain and fills via the fill tube, so a decent no-name fluid usually fits the bill. Mostly because of cost, but also because it's less messy and I still see nice gains from a few litres being swapped.

Recently I asked a rep at Canadian Tire online, what the difference b/t their Full Synthetic and the conventional ATF's that are both useable in Mercon V applications. Below is the link where they replied to my question

SuperTech appears to be conventional oil based and is officially licensed.

At one time, it was advertised as a synthetic blend, on the label. I don't know who supplies Walmart with their Mercon V at this time. Since we don't know the current supplier, we can't obtain a PDS on the fluid. Most of the Mercon V oils, do not label their ATF's as conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic. That is why you need the PDS on the product, to try and determine/ascertain just what the fluids composition is for use.

There seems to be more money charged by selling "Multi-Vehicle" ATF than by selling Mercon V for the old Dex/Merc applications.
