2007 Pacifica. 3 of the 235/65/17s on it are still pretty good. One not so great. Got the money for 4, but would rather get some more mileage out of the the 3 good ones. Thinking of trying to track down a good used one. (FWD car. Would put used one on the back.)

If I find something good in a close - but not exact - size, could I use it? How much could I fudge size-wise?

I'd appreciate the help/advice. Again, I've got the money for 4 new ones. But if I'm confident I can save some money and delay that big purchase, while still being safe, I will.

Run the same size as the OEM recommends. Many shops will not even allow you to change it due to liability reasons.

Sams club has goodyears in that size for $105 each.

Also many tire stores are running a promo for 75 dollars off a set of michelins. The michelins are a $140 tire.

The 4th tire has some slight cracking in the sidewall. Not deep. But it looks like it's been scuffed against a curb and in combination with some weather checking, has started to crack.

Hawkeye,

I take it you don't have a full-sized spare. Wouldn't recommend your buying a used tire in a different size. If you could find a used tire in the correct size, with about the same wear as the others, and the same brand with the same safety ratings and load carrying capacity, that would be a way to go. Another option is to buy two new tires of the correct size but not necesarily the same brand and run them on the same axle.

I absolutely would NOT put a different size tire on there. Why not just buy a new one for that corner? Then when you're feeling flush after your tax refund next year (grin) you can do the other 3.

Can you post a high resolution picture? Depending on what your definition of "slight" is, I might just keep driving on it. If you do, you could keep it on the front (assuming FWD), so it wears out quicker. Then replace the front pair.

Or, go buy one new tire. Keep it on the front. When you have the tires rotated, have the new one swapped side to side, and the other three rotating through the other three spots. Then you should wear out all four at around the same time.

Seems you've answered your own question....twice. Buy yourself a new set of tires. You'll feel safer and happier.

The safest way is, if you could find a used tire with the same size, same wear, same brand and model as the other three. Otherwise you need to buy two new tires, preferably the same brand and model, and have these two new tires in the rear axle.

Thanks for the input fellas. So nothing but the same exact size as the others. Got it.

Not sure about the pic (I've had bad luck trying to get pics on BITOG threads). But I will say it is a a slight separation on the sidewall where the Michelin label is. There are two different sections of labeling, and where two of those sections come together, there is a slight split.

It's probably fine. It's one of those things most people wouldn't even notice. But it is my wife's vehicle and the one we travel in as a family. So I'm trying to weigh limited funding, common sense and practicality and come up with a safe yet economical solution.

Thanks again.

Stick to whatever the factory size is. Look at the sticker on the driver's door jamb to verify this.

I'd buy two new tires, putting them on the front (which goes against the current recommendation of tire manufacturers... for some reason), and put the best two on the back for the winter.

Next spring, replace the two on the back, and move them to the front (as it will be time to rotate the ones on the front to the back).

Then, you'll have 4 really, really good tires in time for a summer vacation.
