I bought a 7.75 HP Snapper lawnmower 1.5 years ago and it has been great up until the last couple mowing's. It started making a loud grinding noise louder then the engine itself. It sounds like the grinding sound when you pull the start cord while the engine is running but it does this all the time. It has a 3 year warranty and Snapper told me to bring it a local power shop for repair. Long story short they replaced the ENTIRE engine stating is was defective. When I got it home it was still making this grinding sound. I took it back and the shop mechanic is now saying "oh that is normal and nothing to worry about". I insist it is not normal. He say he can take another look. He calls me back saying it is all fixed up and was just a loose bolt on the crank start mechanism. I get home and the mower is still making this loud grinding noise.

I'm still stuck with the same problem I took it in for and supposedly the entire engine was replaced. This is going on 6 weeks back and forth and 3 trips to the shop. Should I call Snapper and tell them about what is going on and that the shop probably has ripped them off or should I take my mower back and raise [censored] with the repair shop that Snapper sent me to? I'm so [censored] mad right now!!!

Send them an audio file. On the othe hand, if it's a push mower and the engine is new, what's left to make a noise?

You can usually remove the starter cover yourself, just a few bolts. Start 'er up, remove the cover, if the noise goes away, you found it.

The little fingers that fling out into the flywheel to catch it sometimes don't come back all the way.

I'd see if it's anything I could fix myself (myself being you).
I'm not talking about rebuilding the engine, but something simple.

Then, call Snaper and get their suggestion of what to do next.
Document everything with Date, Places, & Who you spoke with.
Maybe Snaper will recommend a better Repair Shop.

I bought a Toro Lawn Mower that leaked oil from day one.
I ended up changing the upper 'oil seal' in the crank shaft.

Doesn't do any good saying, "I'll never buy another Snaper"
Plenty of people buy (and like) them.

This is a standard complaint that you get with any product.
Just follow standard procedure in dealing with Snaper.

Good luck.

Self propelled. I paid $360 for it at Wal-Mart and was their top of the line model that they sell.

I just called Snapper and they insist I take it back to the repair shop. I'll see if the 3rd time is the charm....

Do what I did with an Echo blower where the blower wheel kept coming loose, even after six trips to the local dealer. I e-mailed Echo and told them I was going to take them to small claims court and explained why. Within 30 minutes, they called the local dealer and told him to give me a different brand new unit. No problems since!

Some companies just don't care for customer satisfaction, they only replace/repair their product(s) after the threat of suing.

Send us a video. We might be able to tell you more after seeing/hearing it. You can post one on youtube and send us a link.

One problem is that what you have is not a true Snapper mower. You have a murray with snapper name on it, as that is all they sell at Walmart. Of course, if the problem is actually the motor, and not a noise from somewhere else, it doesn't make any difference. I sold snapper for 20 years, but am now just independant and mostly retired. I won't even try to work on anything but the engine on the wal-mart snappers.

That's what I was thinking. If he would have said he had an older Snapper self-propelled mower making lots of noise I would have said "welcome to the club". One of the noisiest, best drive systems ever! Love the way you can just stand close to it and look down at it (without touching anything) and tell what's wrong with it (in the rare case something's wrong).

After 4 trips back to the repair shop, new short block installed and new recoil assembly installed, it now appears to be running perfect again. Lets hope it stays that way!
The engine has 7.75 HP so it cuts really well and never bogs down. If it doesn't have any more problems it out performs my Honda and Toro mowers by a large margin.

I have a problem with your statement that your walk behind mower has a 7.75 h.p. engine. What make engine is that? I thought the government put a stop to those overblown horse power claims. Are you sure that is not the foot lbs of torque?

I'm sorry, I ment 7.75 Ft-lbs of tq. Most mowers I have used in the past were 4-6 and the 7.75 is a huge step up in power. It is a B&S engine.

All manufacturers bank on you giving up. Drag their feet and tell them the customer's wrong. This us usually followed by the owner giving up. It's like my personal history with Kohler/Toro. Then I get involved with a company that decides to bring them back into the my life. I warned them ahead of time what could happen. Luckily, the owner decided to minimize the Kohlers to 2 models and skip the Toro knockoffs and go primarily with the Briggs/Honda models.
