Need Help with a Small Engine

Good deal, and good fix! Surprised the screw has a hole in it and is exposed to outside, unfiltered air. To me that would subject it to something getting inside and plugging it up. Well now that you know how it all works, if it starts running rough, or lean misfiring again, start with cleaning out (or heck, replacing for that price) the jet screw. Seems like this is where the problem was, and not necessarily dirt or a clog, but just not big enough to deliver sufficient fuel. Again, good job!.
Thank you. The fuel is not exposed to,the outside. The holes must go through the screw through the sides. I will see about getting a video perhaps tomorrow.

I just changed the oil again. It is at 4.2 hours on its Hobbs meter I added (the Hardlone hour/tachometer).

I still hve to run it through the gambit and finish the break-in with varying load.

Ah, now that makes sense. holes are horizontal relative to the screw and not vertical. Screwing the jet in all the way in effectively seals the pilot circuit to the outside.

Exactly. I think if you want more air you would need to drill the side of the jet …. It’s crazy they don’t just make a screw to dial it in for any altitude or to fix it if it gets somewhat clogged with a little dirt.

So I think I have the same thing, but they are called Torch Tip Cleaners. Maybe not because mine are NOT actually files meant for removing metal (reaming), but they work wonders for carb cleaning.

For $60 I am really not so sure I want a jet reaming tool. I do think my unit in theory could use maybe 2% more fuel at idle, but I am NOT going to chase it because it is 99% improved... I mean, " I can spend all day chasing the perfect fuel mix, but it runs smooth and starts easy, I am going to stop messin'. That jet does NOT need to be a science experiment!"

In all honesty if this is really the CARB/EPA's fault then this is plain sad that they would regulate that it run poorly out of the box!

I still need to get all of you the video of it fixed!

Be careful of those torch tip cleaners; they're serrated and they will enlarge holes in soft metal like brass and aluminum. The idea is to remove the obstruction without enlarging the hole.

Sometimes the goal is to enlarge the hole….

Anyway take a look at the end result. It is running quite well now!

Sorry the phone didn’t register it was horizontal .

So is the 2019 pilot jet different than your original jet?
Yes the jet looks identical but the horizontal hole threw the screw are clearly larger on the 2019 part I ordered.

The result is that the generator now runs wirhout a miss.

Man. If I buy another gen I think I want an EFI!!
Nice. Just out of curiosity what makes the Yamaha EFI most desired to you?

I mean I know that Ryobi, Generac, Pulsar, Sportsman, AI Power, and many others clone it, so that must mean something. I really like how quiet it is and how well designed it looks. The Yamaha color scheme and quality of the control panel is amazing. It even has a small flashlight like LED to light the panel at night, so you can see the outlets. I like that when you start it in eco it down throttles automatically, The fuel gauge is nice, too, and the build quality is good. It has a genuine NGK plug, too.

Then there is the genuine Yamaha MZ80 engine must be great to be copied by so many others. I also like the push rods in that unlike a belt that should never need to be replaced, a push rod really never needs to be replaced.

It has a very nice stop/start switch, and I really like the choke that you pull, but technically that is a cable someone can mess up.

The bad is that it weighs more than Honda by an bit and is a bit louder.

The bad is that the carburetor is a pain to remove because it won’t just slide off the studs. They could have easily put a torx or similar to make unscrewing the studs easy, but the best way is to remove a few panels and lift the gas tank.

You sure lucked out on that. A lot of people don't have that luxury.
What were you thinking? That it would be an identical part I would have to drill out? That’s what I was thinking.

In fact I bought the extra jet to have two chances and because I stripped the threads on some nits and a stud and ordered those at the same time, so now the carb nuts thread on effortlessly by finger again, so that was bad luck when double-nuting stripped threads!

But yes it was luck. When I placed the order I thought.., that when the generator came out in 2019, and it probably ran great at least it does in some other videos and in other countries, so I thought… what if I just order a jet from the original 2019 diagram and NOT the 2024 diagram.

Totally different non adjustable pilot jet that threads perfectly right in and runs it right. For just over $8 yeah it was great luck!

Are you saying you didn't know the jet would be larger until you received it?

Yes, affirmative. I ordered it initially to have two tries to drill or ream it… when I got it, but unbeknownst to me when I ordered, it was already bigger, so when I got it, I shelved the idea of reaming a jet and instead decided to just install it and see what happens.

That said when I ordered, I was hopeful that the lean condition was an EPA/CARB change based on what I read here and hopeful that an older 2019 version of the non-adjustable jet might allow more fuel than the 2024 version.

Anyway, I got lucky and thr part I received was different and is properly metering the fuel on the pilot circuit. It is a little concerning to think that all new units run lean and burble and misfire, and that somebody somewhere thought this was acceptable. I cannot imagine selling a premium product that runs like trash…

That's unbelievable. You can't get any luckier than that. Unreal.

Wow, night and day difference. No more lean stumble/misfire at all that I can tell. Amazing that the older pilot jet passes more fuel than the 2024. But maybe not really, since this is where the EPA/CARB is strictest on fuel mixture, and probably tightened it down more for 2024. They always put it on the ragged edge of lean and seal it up so folks can't adjust it to make it run properly. They fear that someone will mess it up and run so rich they wlll have a cloud of greenhouse gases hovering above them making mini climate change .

Anyway, glad you fixed it. See? You can do it. Just takes a little figuring out and some cursing while trying to get things apart. Now, to work on your YouTube videos 😁.

It is a shame that Yamaha did this. I have a EF2000is that has hundreds of issue free hours on it but Yamaha decided to cheap out and go to the same china made square 2200W body that everyone else has and stop making their own 2000. The old 2000W costs 300 more than the new 2200W.

So when I took it apart, different parts had different locations on them. Might be assembled in China, but not all parts are from China.

I now have this and two other generators of similar size. Two of them have a story.
