need help with a rubber (tie rod ?)

The small rubber on the right side of this picture , what is this ? Is it tie-rod rubber ? It's torn on my pontiac sunfire, so I'm trying to replace it. Should I get the whole part or just this rubber, any manuals or an advice ? Thank you.
I feel like it's knocking under my foot when I turn, yeah only when I turn. So I took the wheel out, to see what is in there and found that this rubber is torn and no longer contains any lube. Is there a lube inside the rubber ?
 
Just get the tie rod. It's probably like $20 or something, no sense trying to cheap out on that part. The boot isn't what's causing the noise. It is simply a protective sack to hold in grease and keep out water.
 
CV joints are all good the only thing is torn this small rubber (outer tie rod, thanks to the justinf89 and musicmanbass). I checked everything under and around the disk didn't find anything that could cause that type of knocking, so blaming this torn outer tie rod. And still looking for any manual "How To"... But check this out, what I found >>> One guys says is possible to cut a few inches of a heater hose and install it instead of the original rubber. . . Now thinking ; actually possible and probably will hold even longer. Will see, anyways still waiting, maybe somebody else knows how would it be or has a better idea or an advice.
 
It's not my picture, just found in here someone did brake works and posted this picture, so I used it to ask what I need. This thing is the same, the only thing is it's torn.
 
Also, you replace them in pairs (left and right side) because if one's failed the other isn't far behind. Need wheel alignment afterwards.

There are inner tie rods too. There may be a shortcut to this but after I replaced my outer tie rods I put the tire back on and put about 10lbs rocking pressure holding the tire at the 3 O'clock and 9 O'clock position and felt a small knock (inner tie rod worn) one side only. Alignment shop said it wasn't that bad yet.

Holding at 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock tests the ball joints.
 
With the car on jack stands, engine running and in gear, do you still get the knocking as you turn the steering to full lock?
Is the knocking rhythmic or irregular?
 
It is a rhythmic , it's like a clicking (not loud, just enough to feel it with my left foot under the floor and only when I make a turn and while turning) that kind of clicking. Doesn't knocking while running engine. But I'll check it out , like you said, will put on jacks and gear. I think I know what you mean, maybe engine pillows aren't good, is that what you want to say ? < don't think so, but anyways will try it, Wed.
 
Sure, you can get the rubber part.
But since you have to take it off to replace it, I'd get a new one, for sure.
It is wise to do both sides at the same time.
Even wear, and matching friction in turns.
You will need to set the toe afterwards.
 
They are incredibly easy to replace (at least the outer ones.)

If they are bad I'd suggest replacing them (and replacing both of them.)

Since you have to get the car re-aligned afterwards I'd suggest replacing your ball joints (more than likely they are located on a lower control arm) and inner tie rods as well (only have to do one alignment and you'll know those components are fresh and will last a long time.)

Well he never said how many miles were on the car... when my tie rod out and inners were up and my ball joints were bad at 250K I decided to replace it all myself. $200 in parts/tools later I had it fixed myself.

If you have to take apart what you're replacing now (and may risk damaging what you just replaced) why not replace parts that could fail a short while down the road?

If he's doing it himself and not taking it to someone who will charge him an arm and a leg I'd say go for it.

I was quoted $850 to replace an inner tie rod (but really only the bushing was bad), and two control arms (with ball joints). For $200 (including random tools I had to buy) I replaced both tie rods (from the outer, adjusting sleeve, and inner) along with two control arms w/ball joints and a sway bar. And I replaced the rear brake pads.

For another $50 I replaced the seals on my AC compressor and recharged it (works amazing)... they wanted $150 just to recharge the thing.

I never said for him to replace his entire front end steering setup, but depending on how many miles/how bad the components are it might just be worth it to get it all out of the way now.
 
You're probably going to be best off with a new tie rod end. One split while my truck was under warranty...the dealer put a new tie rod end on. There wasn't even a question of repairing or replacing just the boot.

This post yells CV joints. not tie rod ends.
