I just bought a 09 Hyundai Genesis with a 3.8 6cyl. Since I picked it up, last week, it has tapped real bad for a second or two during start up, after it has been sitting for awhile. I posted this on the Genesis forums and was told it is because the oil filter sits at the top of the engine, and when it sits the oil drains out of the filter down into the pan, causing a dry start up. This seems like an awful bad design. Some suggested I goto synthetic oil to "help". I posted that I was going to goto Mobile 1 5w/20 and use a quart of Lucas Synthetic oil additive. I have used Lucas Heavy Duty in my race car and was always surprised how slippery the oil came out.
The guys on the Genesis forum called Lucas "snakeoil" and posted a link to this sight with a study on Lucas, showing it was [censored]. What should I use?
I want something that will coat the engine real good and stop the tapping from the dry starts. How long does it take for the engine to break in and everything seat? I have had the car a week and I have almost 700 miles on it. I want to know how long I should wait before switching to synthetic.

If the noise is that bad bring the car back and have it checked. Sounds like a poor design, but have it checked anyway. Perhaps someone familar with that engine will weigh in and suggest a possible oil filter that will help stop the oil draining into the engine. Synthetic oil is good, and will flow faster and easier especially when its cold outside. I would use the grade mentioned in the OM. DO NOT ADD LUCAS OIL ADD TO THAT CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would think that by 500 miles or less the engine is broken in, however it will shed wear metals up until about 10,000 miles by some reports I've read on this board.

Many people on the Genesis forum have experienced the same thing. I guess its considered "normal".It still bothers me. Others have taken theirs to the dealer and they basically said the same thing. 5w/20 is what is recommended for the car in the owners manual.

+1 on not using Lucas Oil Stabilizer in your engine. I agree with taking the car to the dealership to have them check it out. You may have to set aside some time so that the car can sit in order to replicate that sound for the mechanic. Ask a salesman to start up a car on the lot, see if it knocks as loud or at all. You may also want to look into using a higher end oil filter such as Mobil filters for better oil drain back protection.

Ask to see the Technical Manual the dealership has. My Hyundai Santa Fe says to use 5w20 on the oil cap, but the Tech Manual that I purchased (also at the dealership) said to use 5w30 in temperatures below 32oF and 10w30 and higher in temperatures above...

This may solve your problem... Also I think you car is equipped with a cartridge style filter and this may be causing drain back.

With the car being so new I would take it back to the dealer and complain...

Its going in on Friday for them to replace a piece of weather stripping and to rebalance the tires. Im going to drop it off on Thursday night so it sits overnight, and have them write on the tickect to make sure they pay attention to the noise when they start it.

If they are all doing it, you are kinda stuck.......Makes me think maybe the Anti drain back valve is a bad design? You could buy an oil pre-charger $$$$$$ But you should not have to.

Don't use the Lucas. Use a good synthetic oil, and don't add anything to it.

Hyundai actually has a TSB on not using aftermarket filters. Mobile's website says to use any filter. Im buying the OEM filters. Its the canister type. I wonder if the factory puts in different filters than the dealer? Reason I say this is that some who have changed their oil said the filters looked different

I don't think Slick 50 will solve your problem.

That was for standard spin-on filters. Mainly referring to FRAMs that some people had issues with during cold start. The 3.8 uses a cartridge style filter. FRAM sells a filter for this, and is a very good quality. I am almost positive it is an OEM rebadge. My 2006 3.3 ( the 3.8's little bro) does th same for a couple seconds first cold start. Mine seems to like 5w-30 better than the 5w-20. It is pretty much normal, and I have had no issues with mine at all.

So the bottom line is there are no good additives that can help me with dry starts? All of the additives on the market don't work.

The Genesis's engine doesn't have oil retention valves in the heads? What kind of under-engineering is this?

Correct, do not use additives. A good oil is all you need.

It sounds to me like a ADBV problem. Cartridge filters don't have them. The one in my Ecotec has a little tip with an O-ring that defeats the ADBV when you remove the cartridge. I guess beat on the dealership as others suggested. Neither a filter nor an additive will help oil galleries a bad ADBV let drain.

I didnt put anything in it yet. This [censored] me off. If I would have known it was gonna do this I would not have bought the car. I told the dealer when they start it Friday morning to have the service manager and a tech present. We'll see what they say.
