Hey BITOG community! I'm new to the forum and could use some suggestions on a good oil to use in my 5.3L EcoTec.
With that said here are my specs.
- I own a 2014 GMC Sierra 5.3L EcoTec
- GM recommends a Dexos1 certified 0w20 oil
- I live in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA
- I drive moderately and not to hard but not like a grandpa either. I still enjoy getting down on the accelerator.
- My travel to work everyday is 62 miles round trip on the highway in heavy traffic in the afternoons.
I prefer a synthetic oil over conventional oil hands down.
So I came to you all because I know y'all know your stuff. Thank you guys in advance!

Well good you preferring synthetic over conventional, because there is no conventional oil that passes Dexos1. There at least a synthetic blend. So going to a full synthetic is a good choice. The choice pretty wide open in the synthetic field, most have the Dexos1 certification. There different ones on here that liked using Mobil 1 Advance Fuel Economy or Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

Good Morning , welcome to the BITOG forum, and Merry Christmas

I have run QSUD in both my wife's Freestyle and in my Buick with great results results and clean labs back from Blackstone, everyone here has a favorite and QSUD is DEXOS approved and should serve you well, and I am a Quaker State Fan ,how ever I did snatch some Penzoil for a trial @$2.00 a quart for the Buick this summer from auto zone,

Run whatever full synthetic dexos1 0w-20 you want. For all the fuss about it on this forum, dexos1 is a pretty stout specification.

Run any 0W-20 full synthetic DEXOS approved oil you want to! Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline SynPower, Castrol Edge, Quaker State Ultimate, the list could go on. They are all excellent oils. Pick one & follow the oil life monitor in your truck.

Yikes...what's its typical fuel consumption with your Gen-V drivetrain combination?

All the previous advice is spot on. Any major syn 0W-20 will serve well. I am using NAPA full synthetic (Valvoline SynPower clone?) in my '14 Silverado 5.3. Meets the dexos1 certification and can be had on sale for $3.49ish 3 or 4 times a year. The oil seems to agree well with my truck and I expect to stick with NAPA syn unless something changes.

Good luck with your decision.

The best widely available 0w20 is M1 EP.

That my opinion but it checks all the right boxes.

Example it has a large % of PAO basestock

The cheapest synthetic on sale will usually meet dexos standards and will work to the full OCI suggested by your OLM.

AAP has QSUD and a filter for only $20. It will serve you well

how would PP 0w-20 be a better options then PYB atleast in the 10-30 I have been using to TOP OFF(at 1qt now and on an 10k OCI) I Get the synthetic molecules aspect of it but GRP III is the newest iteration in the series oof what constitutes a synthetic. GP III doesn't make a syn, it's the GP IV which is the rule I Go by. Call me school but it never gets old.

This are my year-round picks.

1. 10-30 PYB (only cause I just used a qt to top off and good add pack of moly with FM)
2. 5w30 Val full syn (purportedly has GP IV)
3. Castrol edge 5w30 (the ones with the euro certs)
4. Mobil 1 Extended 0w-20/0w-30
5. M1 0w-20 AFE
6. PP 0w-20
7. German Castrol 5w30

if he is going to be doing his own oil changes his only option is full syn oil unless he get the 0w20 from the dealer. All i said is PP 0W20 is a great oil working in my malibu and could be a good choice for his truck.

I agree with Rand about M1 EP 0W20. Especially you can accumulate more than 300 miles a week or up to about 15k miles in 6 months, M1 EP 0W20 will be able to be used for 2 OCI's a year, after warranty.
