A fuel pressure gauge, a high pressure one. They should rent and sell them at one the autopart stores. I think even Sears sells them.

I'm not famaliar with Subaru ignition systems, but being an earlier Japanese car I assume it has a distributor with the coil mounted seperately. Any service manual should show you how and the specs. You want to check the coil secondary and primary. hook the meter to the postive and negative coil leads (you might want to disconnect the wires first) and you should have about 1-2 Ohms (but check spec). For the secondaries unhook the ignition wire and check between the terminal and the coil negative. Secondary should be around 4-8K oms (but look up the spec).If it should have a distibutorless ignition the test is similar in concept.
Usually a bad coil acts up more when it's hot, and you said it runs worse wen cold. It sounds to me you have a fuel delivery problem and maybe it's the injectors. But I'm not there looking at the car of course.
