I have excel documents (Office 2010) that I can't open with Office 2013. The error I get is... The converter failed to save the file. and another error that reads. . . There was a problem sending the command to the program.

Anyone Know how to open my 2010 excel documents (.xlsx) to the 2013 version?

Please help and thanks.

I've been using LibreOffice (formerly OpenOffice) for over 4 years for business use, it will open just about any Microsoft Office document with rarely any problems. You might try Google Documents to open it too, or the Microsoft Excel app on Skydrive.

Do you still have access to Office 2010? If so, open it there, save it as Excel 97 (xls), and then try opening it in Office 2013.

I do it all the time and "it just works" because the 2010 and 2013 file formats ".xlsx" are mutually compatible. You can open, change and save an Excel file with either version and the other version will have no problem with it. I've even done this with 50MB workbooks going from 32-bit Excel 2010 to 64-bit Excel 2013.

So... the sad story is that your file is corrupt and you probably can't open it with either version.

That's what I was thinking too. Those errors are indicative of either (A) a corrupt file or (B) a corrupt Office install.

From some stuff i've found on the internet you can check and try.

a. make sure the file is complete/not corrupt, if it was downloaded try redownloading

b. install the latest patches/updates

c. if you have microsoft compatability pack installed then uninstall

d. try rename the extension from .xlsx to .xls

e. repair the installation or uninstall/reinstall office

got the open office thing and it opened right up.
