My wife has a 2005 Honda Accord 4cyl. It has 8500 miles on it and I run Mobile 1 5w-20 with great results.

My question is this: She is going to be driving to California in about two weeks. I was just about to change her oil and start the "offical" 10,000 mile Honda OCI's. Since she is making this cross-country trip, do you think the Mobile 1 5w-20 will be fine to use, or should I use maybe the Mobile 1 10w-30?

Substitute one quart of 5W-20 with one quart of 15W-50.

Or.... run all 5W-20 with a half-bottle of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment (gray bottle).

Give me a break. Don't add a quart of 15w-50 to a new Honda! Just use the 5w-20. It'll be fine. I know I've been an anti 20 weighter on here, but I guess the UOA don't lie. Especially with synthetic, it'll stand up to anything you put at it. Maybe if you got stuck in 150 degree ambient temps at high altitude when the density altitude got to 30,000 feet would you have an oil thinning problem from heat.

Triple,

Bitog is a great place to discuss/debate a variety of lubricants & motor oil additives. At some point, we all need to back up our claims with some technical data.

While I think it's really great that you have settled in on a combo that works well in your ride, based on your standards and perceptions, "it works for me" is not a technical justification.

I'd suggest posting a UOA with your home brew so that we can all get on the same page & clearly see the advantages of this blend of M1 grades and the Synpower additive.

Have a Great Day!

isnt it true that additives are not good to put in anymore. I thought i read something posted and tested thru this website saying that its not good to add additives.

deven, wether or not Mulaka choose to use M1 5W-20 or 10W-30(my vote) I don't think that this oil needs an additive. M1 is a great oil right out of the bottle. Some suggest M1 has been dumb-downed from its Sl to its SM version to prevent damage to cat convertors.

My .02 anyway...

I don't think anyone is willing to predict how the Synpower cocktail of a viscosity improver & multiple additives is going to perform unless multiple UOA's are run on the same engine with the same Synpower/oil blend.

Mulaka - I think this was all hashed out in this Current Honda M1 10W-30 Thread .

My comment, as always, is the 10W-30 grade is less susceptible to volatility and consumption due to the slightly higher viscosity base oil content.

If you have any concerns with oil consumption during this trip, the M1 10W-30 option makes alot of sense...

Give me a break Drew! Sounds like the Honda is a non-oil user. I offered a suggestion to help keep it that way.

Yes... any name-brand 5W-20 will not wear completely down in that commute. But will it begin to use needless oil that's irreversible for the remainder of the lifetime of that vehicle????

My Colorado is living proof of absolutely no oil use during long commutes with Mobil-1 mix like this.... even involving alot of driving in the Blue Ridge & Pocono Mountains.

Actually, I intended to mention using both 20% of 15W-50 & a half-bottle Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment for that trip. There are plenty of Honda subscribers to this board using oils as thick as 15W-40 in their Hondas with no squabbles about it.

No, not at all, Drew.

Most of the veteran members here have gained that status due to being right more often than wrong. And your average is probably higher than most!

Well Blue.....

I'm the prediction & living proof that it works. I don't care if you & Drew try it or not. Don't care if the thread-starter here goes with it. I'm just here to tell all that it worked for me ... not only in my Colorado engine for a two-week Eastern Seaboard trip.... but also in my S-10 P/U for a two-week Midwest jaunt last summer.

I'm done on this thread. See-Ya!

May as well use a lousy oil like Amsoil if you are going to start homebrewing in a NEW car UNDER WARRANTY.

Seriously I doubt any of the three would harm a bit. If you are going to lose sleep worrying about "thin" oil, use a 10W-30 - honestly I doubt the car would know....but extended highway driving and hot as it's been - a bump to 30 and no need for a 0W or 5W my vote goes to 10W-30.

This reminds me - I gotta check the oil level in my car. It's been about 3500 miles on M1 5W-20.
