Need a new oil recommendation

I've got a fairly modified 5.3 in my '01 GMC Sierra 4x4. It's cammed among other mods and custom tuned. The truck has 70K miles on it and runs great. I only drive the truck about 5000 mile/year, all onroad driving. The last two years I have run GC 0W-30. What I don't like is that I'm burning a quart of oil in less than that period of time. For instance, I changed it around Christmas and just added a quart this past weekend.

I'm seriously considering trying a different oil. The two that I'm most interested in are both Mobil 1, 0W-40, and 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil. I believe I may be running a little rich at idle and wonder if I could be diluting the oil with a little fuel. Just a guess. I have no used oil analysis to prove or disprove anything.

I know GC is a great oil and on the thicker end of a 30W. But I want to try another oil and see what happens. What would you recommend?

You can try another oil it might help. My old truck was a 2004 1/2 ton with a 5.3 it would use a quart every 3000 miles of towing and it didn't mater what brand of oil was in it. I tried M1,Synpower and RP. It used this amount from 18000 miles on up with no chang.

Some studies have shown that thinner oils reduce oil loss through the rings. The Mobil 1 0w-40 is even thicker than the GC. Perhaps you should try a good 0w30 or 5w30? Realizing that your oil loss may be due to other factors than rings, but it's worth a try in my opinion.

GC is a 0W-30. Please clarify. What oil would you recommend?

BTW, I never see a puff of smoke from the truck.

GC is probably among the thickest 30wts too! Mobil 1 0w40 has shown in a few S52 M3 engines to shear below GC in an equal OCI...so it starts thick and gets thinner than GC relatively quickly which started thinner to begin with. But not all cases show this however.

I hadn't seen the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck before tonight. Definately caught my attention! I'm guessing it's just rebadged Delvac 1?

What about Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30? The cost is about the same on all of these.

I might add that this truck probably has close to 400 HP at the crank and it's hard to leave your foot out of it. It's not unusual for me to hear the 33" tires chirp when it hits 2nd gear, lol.

Is there any reason not to use the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck oil in my gasser?

My tires chirp when I hit 2nd gear after shifting around redline in my 142hp engine as well...

My tires chirp when I hit 2nd gear after shifting around redline in my 142hp engine as well...

Those 2nd gear tire spins are fun huh!!!!!! I pulled onto the access road leaving a parking lot yesterday and gave it a lil too much gas after shifting into 2nd and my car`s whole rear end swung sideways

Lots of Subaru WRX owners run HDEO in there engines, I'm sure your truck would embrace Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Rotella T Synthetic with open arms.

Popular choice would be Rotella Cj4 10w30 and you can top off with plain old forumla shell 5w30 or 10w30. Can use this stuff in your garden equipment too. For performance, I LOVE red bottle QS higher mileage engine 10w30 - got great results wherever tried and it's not too much $$. The tiny amount of "advertised" friction reducing additives (slick 50) are not the same old stuff and not to be afraid of. Redbottle is Highly recommended by everyone who's tried it and not overthought it.

What valve seat and open pressure you running or just stock springs? Roller cam I suppose.

BTWont like "thick" synthetics, would prefer a thick dino over syn anyday.

I'm running LS6 springs. All 5.3s have roller cams. I have the redline set at 5900.

If not one of the HDEOs mentioned above, I'd also consider trying a High Mileage oil if the burn continues with the HDEO. MaxLife Full Synthetic in a 10w30 would be a good place to start.

Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 would be a good oil for once a year changes in this application. Very stout, cost-effective oil.

Considering you experience the same winters as I do, I would suggest a good 5w30 such as Redline. It's pricy, but is thinner at cold temps than GC while still maintaining viscosity at higher temps.
