Cut open Napa Gold 1522, after a 6,000 mile OCI.

Looks like the media is still in good shape

Just a bit of a gap between the pleats, but I think thats pretty normal for Napa/Wix filters

I usually use Wix or Napa Gold but I've considered Mobil 1 and Purolator PureOne filters as an alternative... If anyone has some pics of a used, cut open PureOne or Mobil 1, please post! (I'm not too interested in the "brand x filter is 99.999% efficient" marketing hype - I just want to see the innards of some quality made filters).

Post away!

Looks good. I think pleats can open up a little on any filter and that's why you need tightly spaced holes in the center tube. Do you have any pics of the filter bypass assembly?

No bypass valve on this filter - on newer GM trucks like mine, the bypass is built into the engine block.

Darn it, never could find the by pass filter on my 100k 67 Beetle nor the radiator cap, I think someone removed the hoses too, but it never overheated. Oh, well, 2qts of ancient Havoline oil ran well and no synthetics, how did I manage. No additives either were ever used, I need to check in to a mental ward now. Ok, lets go have some fun........................

Good looking filter! Help up well, no flattening of media after 6k miles. I think Wix made filters have all the traits of a quality filter.

I use this filter on my chevy truck. Looks nice. One question: How does oil get to the media? Do those "teeth" on the top cap allow space between the cap and outer shell for the oil to pass? Seems like a very thin gap.

The oil pushes that anti-drain back valve down against the metal end cap of the filter and the oil flows around and through the the filter element.

You got it - the O.D. of the the end cap is made smaller than the I.D. of the outer shell...those teeth flare out a bit to keep the filter element from rattling around against the outer shell. Not what I would call a large gap between the end cap and the outer shell, but plenty big enough for warm oil to flow around, and in any case, still less restrictive than the filter media.

Referencing the picture of the filter, in 40 years of changing oil for myself and others I've never seen the media so darkened--even oil from the 70's with leaded fuel and carb'd fuel systems
I guess I've just been 'living right'

It's possible that it's just the camera, lighting, and angle that make it look so dark.
