Napa Gold 51355 cut open

Vehicle/ engine: 2004 Audi A4 with the 3.0 V6 ~ 135,500 on the OD
Distance/ time: 8.5k/ 6 months
Oil used: Mobil 1 0w40 with about 2 quarts of makeup
Replaced with: Mann filter and 5w40 Pennzoil Ultra Euro

Surprisingly, the inside of the can was very clean with little carbon chunks. Not too impressed with the waviness, but that is about it. I am sure it could have made it to the 10k factory OCI, but I think I'll stick with the Mann filters for this application from now on though.

What does waviness indicate? Something going wrong or just cosmetic?

I am guessing in this situation, it is caused by excess moisture due to wintertime cold starts.

So the filter media absorbing the moisture would be a good thing or not?

Most people get the Golds on sale for about $3.69. The constant competition is social media/internet marketing.

I can't speak for pricing in Canada, but in the US, a NAPA Gold is about a dollar less than a Fram Extra Guard. But that's only for those that buy them when they are not on sale. I stock up on all my filters when they are on sale at NAPA, so I paid $3.17 for a filter that is at least equivalent to the Extra Guard, but less than half the price.

IMHO, the NAPA Gold is one of the best values for the buck. I get great UOA results with them, so they are now my go to filter.

This filter is actually around $9 at normal price btw.
