Got a NAPA add in the mail today with a coupon for their conventional oil for 1.79 a quart. What's your opinion on the oil and their Pro Select filter?

I used it in a truck I had and it seemed to be good. Its made by valvoline but has a little less add pack then the valvoline WB. Thats a good deal though, but for the money I would choose chevron supreme over the napa if that is availible in your area. As for filters, people on here say the napa golds/wixs are good and the pro select are average but I only use OEM filters and I truely think that is the way to go.

That's a great price, I hope it's a national promotion. I would say stock up and stash as much of it as you can afford to buy.

I have been using Napa conventional 10W30 and Proselect oil filters for several years now, no problems at all with either one. Any differences between Napa oil and Valvoline WB are very minor and don't matter. I change my oil every 3000 miles but others here run Napa oil and Proselect filters to 5000 miles with no problems.

FWIW, Carquest brand oil is the same as the Napa brand oil-made by Ashland for Carquest. Proselect filters and Carquest Red label filters are both exactly the same too. Wix makes the Proselect filter and Carquest Red label filters to Napa and Carquest's specs. I have a combination of Proselects and CQ Reds in my stash, and I just used my last 4 quarts of Napa 10W30, but I have 16 quarts of Carquest brand 10W30 in my stash too.

You can use either of the Napa and Carquest oil and filters with complete confidence. I get good MPG and power on them and my truck only burns about maybe half a cup of oil over a 3000 mile OCI. I use the Napa 5W20 and Proselect filters in my girlfriend's Honda too, and have had no trouble at all with them.

I use both sometimes. The NAPA Golds are way better than the ProSelect filters. The oil is fine.
ProSelect filters are sort of OK for cheap though. I'm running one on the old VW Bus right now with Castrol 20W-50

There was a recent bad report here on the Pro Select. If we avoided every filter that had a bad report we would have nothing left but stuff like the Pronto I am running on my truck. The only bad thing about them I have read here is that they are now made in China. I would cut it open at the end of the OCI and carefully inspect it.

I think I have seen more reports of bad filters in the last month here than the whole 7 years I have been here. ST, AC, Wix, Purolator, Pro Select, etc. You can't panic over one bad report on the internet.

True that.

The ProSelect has a weaker, more porous media than the Gold, so I wouldn't expect great filtration by comparison.

(But if I were worried, I wouldn't be running the ProSelect on the VW right now.)

While I have never cut open a filter, I get the best flow with Proselect. My oil pressure holds solid and steady too, about 80 psi at cold idle and about 65 to 70 psi at 2000 RPM and 70 MPH when cruising on the interstate. That's plenty good enough for me. I change my oil at 3000 miles so I doubt the filter is on the engine long enough to cause any problem with the media breaking down.

The Proselects I buy for my truck and my gf's car both say Gastonia, NC on the box. The Carquest Red filters in my stash say right on the side of the filter, "Made in USA" "Affinia, Gastonia NC". That is also plenty good enough for me.

Napa and Carquest would not put their good name on an inferior or low quality filter. A lot of garages use the Proselect and CQ Red filters and Napa or CQ brand oil too, and I doubt they would risk their reputations on a bad filter or low quality oil.

Proselects, CQ Reds, Napa and CQ brand oil all work fine for me, and thousands of others too.

I've never seen an after-filter OP difference with different filters, but that's just my vehicle.

I got a grand opening coupon for NAPA and got like six ProSelects for $1.99 ea., and 8 qts NAPA oil for $2.50/qt.

Couldn't pass that up!

The NAPA oil add-pack is weaker than the Valvoline.

I understand this, but what is it lacking that the Valvoline has?
