The rumor is Ford and GM can start using it in Feb 2024 (with the adapter). Tesla only wants to allow access to a few automakers at a time, to sort out bugs. Sounds like VW might not even get the adapter until 2025! Guess that’s the penalty for waiting so long…

It's unfortunate that so many companies are embracing this charging architecture. Although it's rumored that Tesla is going to an 800v charging standard Similar to what Porsche already uses.

Well, if one type has the most installations and by far the highest up-time, why not? The additional demand will accelerate new installations. Standards make our life easy.
My car shows me the locations, number and size of chargers, chargers in use and down chargers. The new algorithm shows expected availability including expected time of current cars completing charging.

Imagine the outcry if gasoline nozzles were not standard.

If drivers couldn’t pull up to any pump.

The introduction of unleaded required a new standard, but they’ve been standard for a very long time.

This is one area where oddly enough where engineering stuck with what worked. I'm almost suprised that proprietary gas pumps weren't a thing early on.

I distinctly remember a time when my parents went to get gas in their 1975 Chevy Monza and the new-fangled vapor recovery pump handle nozzle couldn’t get deep enough. There’s a joke somewhere about that which I probably shouldn’t elaborate on. It had the spring loaded inlet flap door buried in there, since traditional nozzles are long enough to reach in and push it in. A gas station attendant (this might have been full serve) tried and it would just splash gas back with the flap still there. He finally got it to work by jamming a rubber hose in there to push down the flap with the nozzle still above the flap level.

However, it’s not as if the world is unfamiliar with different electrical connectors.

Porsche just used CCS. They didnt invent anything new.

The V4 superchargers are capable of 1000V surpassing CCS in every way.

Not that it matters much as the vehicles batteries are the limiting factor far more than the voltage at the tap for around 70% of a given charge curve.

Other charging providers are also going to NACS. Electrify America, as an example, has committed to starting to install NACS on chargers, while also keeping CCS (at least keeping it for now..)

I wonder just where CCS will be in 3-5.

Block Buster kept the betamax format around a while too....

I think we'll just see reverse adaptors for NACS just as many have used CCS to NACS for a long time now.
For sure - but carrying, using, and living with adaptors - sucks,
Adapters never guarantee full functionality and often hobble either signal, current, or main/ startup connection handshakes.

Definitely. It'll be less user friendly for sure.

The only thing needed is someone to squeegee the windshield!

A Cadillac OPTIQ seen testing with a NACS/J3400 port. Rumors are some GM EVs start getting NACS late this year, early next.

Next-Gen Bolt EV will almost certainly debut with a NACS port. I’d guess we’ll see Bolt EV debuted in the next few months.

Kind of ironic now - cable/connector companies are debuting 1,000kW / 800A equipment with CCS2 - largely because the large handles/connector allow for much better pin cooling than NACS can provide. NACS/J3400 handles will likely get bigger in the future to cool better.

I hope so. I'd possibly consider a GM. I grew up with GMs and lost interest in the brand through the 2010's. The big downside to CCS is carrying an adaptor that might not work in all cases with Tesla Superchargers or dealing with the crap charging network CCS offers. Maybe It's blown out of proportion, but I've seen so many bad reviews of companies like Electrify America and random other smaller companies. i've only ever used Shell for level 2 and Tesla Superchargers. Every time I've plugged into a Supercharger it has worked. I've never experienced the issues I've seen in YouTube videos.
