Just an update, another 40k km's on the XD-3 after the LIM replacement. Still looks great, and barely needs any top-up now that most of the leaks fixed.
As long as the LIM stays intact and the car doesn't hit any more wildlife (the front end had to be rebuilt twice in the past 3 years!) -- I'll be leaving this oil in indefinitely.
At $30 an oil change...I've already saved 18 oil changes, so around $600. Still have a big stockpile of XD-3 0W-30 here, which may very well last the life of the car.
