Changed the oil on my daughter's Rodeo today and noticed it had a Purolator filter. What the heck, I decided to cut it open. What a shock. It has torn media. This has about 7,000 miles on it with WalMart Super Tech 10w30 High Mileage oil.

Two tears at each end. I don't think I'll be buying anymore Puro filters. Her Rodeo got a Fram Tough Guard this time.

You'd think Puro would be rolling on the floor begging for mercy by now instead of basically telling people to pound sand. There must have been hundreds of thousands on the road that have done this. Fortunately it doesn't seem to hurt anything, but it's a quality control issue and I highly doubt a torn Classic is anywhere near the 97% efficiency the customer thought he was getting.

If you're gonna do 7k OCI's a Tough Guard is a better idea anyway IMO.

As always, thanks for cutting and posting!

Thanks for cutting and posting. Another failed Purolator, I returned 3 Purolator Classic filters to Pep Boys last month to exchange for 2 Fram Tough Guard filters.

Thanks for cuts. Yeah, at least we heard from Fram that they routinely cut open randomly selected used oil filters for basic inspection. Purolator, on the other hand, has not done that. Purolator (Pure-Oil-Later) basically invented oil filtration back in the 1920's, so maybe its just modern arrogance, don't know why.

Indeed, the Tough Guard is an excellent choice. I'd even be comfortable with an Extra Guard for a 7,000 mile OCI after seeing how good my last one looked after 6,500 miles of winter use. The media was fine, end caps were firmly attached, and the nitrile ADBV was still very pliable and sealing well. Can't ask for much more from a ~$4 filter with that usage.

Just another example of tears. The tear rate is looking higher and higher. What a shame.

Ok............ We need the sample sizes & percentages.

How many do we have torn & how many do we have not torn???

Yes, people are more likely to report torn ones on the web, yet you have to ask yourself how many people even cut open their filters at all. Not many cut theirs open.

I had a puro classic lined up for the Pacifica but went and grabbed a TG instead for the next OCI. The engine already is whacko half the time anyway, last thing I need is a filter failure.

At least all the ones I've seen torn haven't had "big" holes in them, just a 3 mm hole. I really don't think its that bad. Still, wouldn't use it myself.

huh... they claim everything they've seen is from "stockpiled" Filters?

that date code is July 24, 2013. little shy of 10 mos since manufacture date...

the common denominator in nearly all cases, seems to be wide pleats near the seam.
Did some bean counter decide to reduce the Media used in each filter by and inch or so?

I'm 1 for 2 so far. Going to be cutting open more soon...

I may very well try an Extra Guard on my next oil change. there is nothing really wrong with my current Napa Silver, I just want to try out a Fram. I might even cut it open at the end of this next OCI. I have not used Fram in a long time, but did use them a lot back in the 1990's and early 2000's and never had any trouble with them. No matter what filter I use I will not go back to Purolator until they correct this tearing problem.

Example: Your 1 for 2 is of course 50%, but it is not a high enough sample size to be representative of how many out there tore.

Say we get up to 100 cut open and say only 30 are torn, then we/Purolator can assume a 30% Failure Rate and they would for sure have to launch process improvements.

Typically, to get to Six Sigma, you can only allow 3.4 Defects per Million Opportunities (DPMO)

Sure looks like there's more than 3.4 tears per Million, right?
