I have a 1996 Chevy Blazer 4.3. I have been experimenting with different filters for this vehicle and trying to note any differences. So far I have used Fram(oops), Purolator Premium Plus, AC Delco, and now Baldwin. One used oil analysis has been done with the Prolator and particulates were minimal. At idle my stock oil gauge warm is 40 psi, any pressure on the gas peddle and pressure is 60. This is across the board on all filters except the Baldwin. The Baldwin is installed now and at idle the pressure is at approx. 50 psi. when warm. No other filter had this happen while installed. Also with all filters there is an upper end chatter when accelerating, except with the AC Delco. The engine remained quiet throughout at all times. I have been looking between filtering vs flow, going by the stock gauge and just plain old listening to the engine. I want to switch filters to see if a change occurs but want to do a used oil analysis on this combination. I am still searching but thought I could get some thoughts on this.

DoubleDee - The Baldwin is installed now and at idle the pressure is at approx. 50 psi. when warm.

How do you think that could happen?

DoubleDee - One UOA has been done with the Prolator and particulates were minimal.

Are you having a full particle count done with each UOA?

In my 98 S10 with the 4.3, Ive found that regardless of filter I choose: AC standard, AC ultraguard gold (what I usually use), supertech, or fram, the pressure is more or less the same:

55psi at cold idle or when the throttle is applied
about half that when at FULL hot idle.

It has been exactly the same since I bought the truck new, and I have since then used Pennzoil Conventional 5w30, rotella T synthetic 5w-40, Mobil 1 5w30, Castrol GTX 5w30, Castrol Startup 5w30 and now GC 0w-30.

For the first time ever, the operating pressure has changed. Now it is a hair above 60 psi at cold idle, about 55 at hot operation when throttle is applied, and about 5 psi higher than usual at FULL hot idle.

So it appears to me in my truck that the OIL has the main effect on oil pressure, and as a result, everything else.

Me too!!

I'd look elsewhere for the cause of the increased gauge reading besides the filter. Although I haven't seen too many test spec's on filters (complete) ..all that I have seen appear to be in the 4 PSID across the filter at what we would consider normal operation. This is also about what I observe myself ..so..

I just thought I would post for reviews because previously, between three different oils and 3 different filters, the pressure was the same at all times. Once at operating temperature, idle pressure was 40 and any accelerating pressure was 60. Why the sudden change with a different filter and the same 5w30 oil. My engine has 64K miles on it and has been auto RX'd. Oil stays "clean" for long periods.

It is a curious change. Perhaps if next change you go back to another filter and see if it continues to be elevated. If so ..then I would probably look to the sensor as the cause.

I believe the oil pressure is measured after the oil filter. Thus, the filter will have no effect on the the pressure that shows on the pressure gauge, nor will it affect the pressure that the engine components "see." However, the pressure that the oil pump pushes against will vary with the type and loading of the filter. So, you may waste a bit of hp with a highly restrictive filter.
