+1 on getting the trans serviced. I like nissans but it seems the transmissions blow up by 100K. engine=bulletproof.

That's not good. I thought Honda was the one with good engines and fragile transmissions.

I'm just saying that anyone I've known w/ a nissan had the transmission go out by 100K. don't know if it's a trait or not.

Check the spark plugs (use OEM NGK), PCV valve, fuel filter (don't remember if the one in this car is in the tank). Change all the fluids and you should be golden. I have a '99 Maxima and I love it. I also have a G35 with the same 3.5 V6 in it (slightly tuned differently) and love the torque.

I think the spark plugs get changed at 100k or something. Is the PCV valve easily accessible and can an aftermarket one be used? The fuel filter is in the tank.

I really liked the mid-late 90s Maximas. I actually wanted one for my first car. Something about the styling that make it age well. Sort of like the Acura Legend.

I always loved that car. Bummer (to me) that it is an auto.

I didnt buy one because with sunroof I could not fit comfortably in there. At 6ft 4, my head would always touch the roof unless the seat was well-reclined.

Nice car!!!

You are 6'4" when you sit? A typical, misshapen BITOGer!

You got a good year, when it made the leap to 3.5 liters and 255hp. Silky smooth power at any rpm. Had a friend who had a 2002 auto, and I went and test drove a 2002 5-speed. I'm a big fan of a M/T, but in this car, the auto is the only way to keep massive torque steer at bay. I ended up getting a 2002 Altima 3.5 mainly due to price.

Very nice car....looks like it was well cared for.

Nasty cabin air filter

The glove box label said it's suppose to be washable, but it didn't hold its shape well. Probably isn't the original though. Went to four different auto parts stores and apparently an aftermarket filter is non-existent. Just got one from eBay for $17.80 shipped.

There were four codes. Two related to the 02 sensor, one was the anti-theft, and the other was for the variable air intake system. Several members here have said they're nothing major, so I cleared the ecu. Now I'm waiting to see if they come back. After some research on maxima.org, I found out the vais is common because a plastic piece inside can break off. It can be fixed though with JB Weld. I'm not sure about the anti-theft though. One person who had the same code had a problem with the engine immobolizer and his car didn't start. My car starts fine. The 02 sensor is probably on its last leg though with the mileage on the car. But I'm still hoping that the codes came on because the battery was dead for a while like a couple of members here have suggested.
