It's official. I don't have the BITOG bug anymore. Today, I paid to have the oil changed in my GTI. That's the first time I've done that in over 7 years. That's not even the bad part; The O'Reilly house brand synthetic oil I was running had been in my GTI (turbo) since June 2010, and it had almost 15k miles on it. . The oil change with Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 oil filter cost $80. Add a new set of Michelin Harmony tires to the bill, and now I'm back-slidden and broke. /pity party.

You disgust me

I once paid to have the oil changed on my late fathers ford f150, I didnt feel the least bit guilty not getting under there and getting dirty. It also felt good knowing which oil would be best (for me) choosing motorcraft 5w30. Imo you dont have to change your own oil to be a true bitoger.

The crime isnt the oil stuff (hope you did pull some of that 15k oil for a used oil analysis though)... its the fact that you put Michelin harmony tires on a GTI!!!

LOL!!! Didn't pull a drop for used oil analysis, but guilty as charged on the tires. Truth be told though, these Michelin Harmony tires are perfect for my driving style, which is 100 miles per day of highway miles to and from work. Hard as it is to believe, they don't look bad on the GTI, either.

Since confessions are in vogue.........I decided in Jan of 2009 while picking up my new 2008 RAV4 that I wasn't getting under cars any more. Bulk conventional oil and the dealer changes it every 5,000 miles or six months. Six months always comes first seeing as how I just turned 10,000 miles this month. With the six month OCI to maintain warranty and low mileage, lots of good oil has gone down the drain. That's Toyota's doing not mine.....my hands are clean and they're going to stay that way.

Not a problem at my house... http://www.safecare-gloves.com/mechanics-gloves.html

I'll still be changin' my own oil when I have to drag my walker under the car with me...

Still using the wrong oil. I asked for Mobil 1 10w30, because that's what I wanted. VW 502.00 be darned.

Poor poor GTI, hope it never sees any hard driving

Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 is at least ACEA A3/B3 and high enough HTHS (3.5). Mobil 1 10w30 is 3.0.

All kidding aside, the GTI is strictly a commuter-mobile and has been for all of it's 177K miles. Speeds rarely exceed 75 MPH, and I always give it a proper cool-down before shutting it off. Previous used oil analysis have shown that I could go considerably longer on the oil than VW recommendations. If the GTI's engine gives up the ghost any time soon, I'll be surprised. The turbo is another story. I expect it to give out first...maybe around 300K miles.

I'll come clean. Sometimes if I have a killer coupon, and the weather is cold, I just have it done by a shop I trust with the stuff I bring. Rarely though.
