I wouldn't do it but 40k oil changes aren't going to kill your engine. My brother-in-laws brother, ok you still with me? Well he had a Ford escort he bought with approx. 45,000 miles on it. He never changed the oil or filter just added oil when it needed it.
He used it as his work car back and forth to job sites, construction, he was a union electrician. Well at 98,000 miles the car still started and motor ran good. Car was being put up for sale at that point for safety reasons, brakes, broken tailights, etc...
I didn't believe him when he told me this. So I looked at the oil on the dipstick and it was blacker then black and was gooey. There was snow on the ground when he proceeded to start the car. So I know it was colder then 32 degrees that day. Motor fired right up and sounded tight. This was back in 1992, so I don't know what the current S* rating was at that time.
