My GM OLM Is Wacked Out

What does the OLM give you for a percentage of life left...or did it trip perviously before you changed the oil without resetting it (as Goldenrod hints)? If that were the case I'd think that it would continue to indicate the need for a change. Perhaps there's something wrong with the unit, or your operating conditions just might be "favorable" for that engine.

I wouldn't do it but 40k oil changes aren't going to kill your engine. My brother-in-laws brother, ok you still with me? Well he had a Ford escort he bought with approx. 45,000 miles on it. He never changed the oil or filter just added oil when it needed it.
He used it as his work car back and forth to job sites, construction, he was a union electrician. Well at 98,000 miles the car still started and motor ran good. Car was being put up for sale at that point for safety reasons, brakes, broken tailights, etc...
I didn't believe him when he told me this. So I looked at the oil on the dipstick and it was blacker then black and was gooey. There was snow on the ground when he proceeded to start the car. So I know it was colder then 32 degrees that day. Motor fired right up and sounded tight. This was back in 1992, so I don't know what the current S* rating was at that time.

MC5W20, yeah a motor can run fine with sludge in it, but it doesn't mean you should do it, the result will be shortened life.

There's also (or was) a full explanation of the current GM OLS system on the environmental part of www.gm.com. Even has a graph of the upper and lower limits of the mileage ranges encounter in their testing of the system prior to release.
Prior GM "Oil Change" lights were triggered purely by mileage.
It's a simple procedure to reset the GM OLS system at each oil change. Should be in the owner's manual.

The sensor in the oil pan of GM vehicles ONLY works the "low oil level" light and does nothing else.
