Ok here is a good one.
My dad was teaching me how to change oil.(im around 7 years old at this time).
"We go to work on dads old work van... i watch closely as my dad drains the black blood out of the engine, replaces the filter, than the plug, and puts new oil into the van. starts up van everything goes great...
later that week my uncles drive up. pop the hood of there car (don't know the model of the car, but it had a slanted six in it) and pour a quart of oil into it. as dad and i watch, i wanted to know y they hadn't drained the oil out like we did? dad enplanes, and i look as the car smokes badly away.
around a month later, the uncles car dies in our driveway, and they offer to sell it cheep to my dad. He bought it, and i wanted to change the oil in it... after bugging my dad all day i guess he caved.
he broke the plug loose, gave me the pan (1 gal bucket) and told me to do it like he did. i pulled the plug, the oil started pouring, every things going well, but... it didn't stop like dads did, so i put the plug in and asked dad for another bucket.. than another... the poor lil car had over 3 gallons of oil in it! dad replaced the oil, and the car not only started, but soon it didn't smoke, nor use/leak any oil at all, we had it in the family for years!

dad never told his brothers what he did to fix it.

hey, my first oil change with dad was back in 1995, he had a Holden Premier HQ 1972, with 726 thousand miles on it, he told me to change the oil every 1000 miles and oil filter every 2000. He had the car since 130 thousand miles and never repaired it except wheel bearings, brakes etc. Oil he used was Valvoline 20w50 XLD, cheapest at the time. I have followed his ways since.
He is Hospital now at the age of 86, on his last breath. Has smoked one pack of cigarrets a day since 1945

My first oil change was after i got my first car and it was due for its 2nd oil change ( used car ).

1st time i took i to EZ lube and they annoyned me SO much i decided to [censored] with them and just start doing my own maintenance.

My father was not happy about me going under the car, I had jack stands and i also used two car jacks ( took one from my mother's) just to be safe for first time. It was so easy I started to do all kind of repair on my own.

Nice mine was with my Dad around 1990 in his 1979 Magnum 360. He used nothing but Castrol, I think he used 10w-40 in that thing.

I did my first oil change with Dad at his ESSO Station in '68. Then I acaually worked with him from ~'71-'79(even though I had another full time job), then he retired.

Anytime I talk about my Father, I like to mention that he would have been 100 this year(February).

I don't remember my first oil change with my dad, but I DO remember that he always used Castrol GTX; 20W-50 in his 4-cyl engines and 10W-40 in the V6 engines (before you panic, remember this was in Houston, TX in the '80s). GTX was somewhere around $1.00 a quart at WM back then. He wasn't picky about filters-whatever was cheapest. I remember he would sometimes let me put used oil on the filter gasket and I remember him always washing his hands in gasoline when he was done.

I remember my first 'solo' oil change - 1987 Ford F-150 4.9L I-6, and I used Castrol Syntec Blend 10W-30 (Probably API SH) and a Fram Tough Guard filter (before the grippy surface was added). I also remember my second 'solo' oil change; I apparently used superman-type strengh to tighten that Tough Guard filter because I had a [censored] of a time removing it.

I remember the first must've been on Dad's '84 Olds Delta 88 with a 307 in '97 or '98. He used to get 12qt cases of Kendall Synthetic Blend 10W-30 from Value Home Centers for something really crazy cheap, maybe $8-9. He always used an ACDelco filter.

1997 GMC Suburban 5.7....no idea what oil we used...probably some old napa house brand sitting around the shop.

Must have been late '60's or early '70's. My Dad had been having his oil changed at local gas stations as far as I remember. He read an article in Popular Mechanics or something about changing your own oil, and decided he could do it himself. He did his own oil changes for quite a while after that, but not too much other mechanical work. Nonetheless, just those oil changes inspired me to do a lot of my own mechanical work.

First time watching Dad was before he messed up his hand and couldn't do the changes anymore. It was his old 1993 F150. Probably got Castrol GTX 10W30 and a Fram filter.

My first oil change was on my then girlfriend's Subaru. It Castrol GTX 5W30 and a Purolater oil filter (sale special at autozone that week. Think it was about $9.99)

My first change was with my Dad on a Dodge Dart. This was a 60's Dart, with the push button transmission. It had one of the canister filters on the side of the engine. Dad was a Valvoline guy, and had 5 quarts of the highly prized Racing Oil in the white cans with the red and blue V, as well as a Fram filter. We drained, we removed the filter, and reinstalled the new one, replaced the plug and added the Valvoline. Upon start up, the engine promptly pumped a lot of oil out of the filter base. I didn't know this wasn't normal, ( I was maybe 5 or 6 years old) and Dad was watching for the idiot light on the dash to go out. It didn't, and in about 30 seconds or so, the majority of the oil was on the garage floor. Dad was pretty fired up, but knew exactly what we had done. Money was tight then, but he had a little stash tucked in his wallet, and we got a new o-ring for the canister, and 5 quarts of Royal Triton (I still remember it was 39 cents a quart, vs. 79 cents for the racing oil). We did the whole procedure again, and I was amazed the oil was purple as it went in. That whole experience set me on a course of DIY maintenance, problem solving, watching what I spend, and replacing all the worn parts when I have something apart.

My first oil change with Dad was on a '64 Impala with a 283 engine, back in 1987. That engine had the old style canister filter on the bottom of the engine. I remember having to be careful about lining up the gasket properly on the canister, or else the thing would leak profusely. We later added a Mr. Gasket spin on filter conversion kit. Dad always used Penzoil, back when it had "Z-7" on the outside of the can.

first oil change with my dad was back in 2006, right after we had got the Dodge Cummins 2500, the truck which I drive now, me and my dad swapped. I was 15 at the time, had never changed oil in anything, and was just starting to learn about vehicles. We got some buckets, cut them down to fit under the truck and enough to hold 3 gallons (12 qt capacity 5.9 Cummins) Dad told me to pull the plug and start draining the oil, which I did, but i grabbed the short bucket, and as I just laid there watching the oil flow out, it started to overflow, my hair was completely black and oil went all over the cement. My dad wasnt too happy. Took the hosepipe and almost a whole bottle of Dawn to clean my hair. Ive come a along way since then, I do all my own repair and maintenance, I prefer diesels, and most of my families maintenance.

My first change was at my great uncles garage... I backed up to, and set down{tripped backwards) in a pan of oil that had been drained, dad had to take me home and change my clothes... Mom??? Well she was royally [censored]... I was four, and do vaguely remember the incident...

Year 2000, I was 18, 1st vehicle, 1989 Jeep Comanche 4x4 with 121,??? mile 4.0, AX15, NP231 Dana30/35. Old oil out 6 quarts JiffyLube Pennzoil Bulk 10w-30 and Pennzoil PF-16 oil filter. In, 5 quarts New MotoCraft(FredMeyer Brand)20w-50, 1 quart ACE 10w-40 and Purolator oil filter.

I was too young to remember when I first saw my dad do an oil change. All I know is that while I was really young, he had a 1987 Hyundai Excel and he used Castrol engine oil, because Castrol advertised how it was for compact cars that stress the engine.

I am sure he also did this to mom's 1985 Nissan Maxima sometimes. Other times, mom would go where there was a quick lube and car wash combination.

The other thing he showed me (I saw it in the Maxima) was how he changed the antifreeze. He showed me why the engine has to be on at certain points in the process. He also told me that you had to do that once a year. That was back when every antifreeze brand in an auto parts store was green.

I was 16 when I first changed my own oil in my ride at the time: a 1984 Ford LTD station wagon (the V6 flavor, not the land yacht lol)....Stepdad told me to use Castrol 20w50 and handed me an AC Delco filter to go on it. It helped I was also taking Auto Tech before I was able to start driving, so I had a leg-up

I remember my dad buying cases of QSGB at Track Auto or Pep Boys (whoever had a sale) for the Datsun station wagon. We usually used FRAM orange cans. I really had no interest in car maintenance back then, though!
