my neighbour came over because he saw me ripping shingles off the roof. we got to chatting and he told me that his house had a roof leak but instead of re roofing it, he decided to pour concrete over the shingles. i thought at first this was some kind of stupid joke, but he insisted. then i thought he was just a liar but he offer to show me. so i went over to his place and sure as #@$%! he had poured about 2 inches of concrete on his entire roof.
how is this possible? according to him he did it all by hand and carried up 1 bucket at a time on a ladder.
he apparently trowel each bucket of concrete to keep it from dripping off his sloped roof.
i wonder how many thousands of pounds are up there.

Hmm..is he hoping the next hurricane won't lift it??

What type of finish did he put on it? Does it look like a stucco roof with all the nooks and crannies?

You really do need to snap an image or two of this for us to ponder some more. While you're at it ..get an image of this master of Bud Lite's next audio commercial.

"Here's to you, Mr concrete roof covering applier (chorus). While other use shingles, tar paper ..or rubber you use sand patch...you're idea of a mixer isn't with party favors and uses a 5 hp motor to provide rotation....

Probably the same type of guy who adds bottle after bottle of stop leak to a 15yo radiator that leaks from corrosion!!

what is scary is the structure holding up the roof is not designed for the weight of concrete. he could have easily added 10's of tons of weight!

a 50'x50'x2" slab of concrete would weigh 30 tons!!

Well at least he is in Florida and won't have to deal with the added weight of a foot of snow like folks do in northern regions. But the concrete surely will crack before long. The guy must be a bit off in the head.

That weight overhead is scary. I would bet the local building inspector would have something to say about it. That amount of work is staggering, too.

Well, he probably didn't mix to 3500lb/sq/ft spec's ..which, IIRC, is your 3" sidewalk type deal out of the truck. X bags per yard. ..but still ...

I agree, pics please! I was introduced to roofing this past year (we ripped off five layers of singles..right down to the original wood shingles!); I couldn't imagine doing that to a roof!

Let's do some math, shall we?

Concrete typically has a density of about 150 lb/ft^3.

So, assuming about 1500 ft^2 of roof area and a 0.5-inch thick layer of concrete:

150 lb/ft^3 * 1500 ft^2 * 1/24 ft = 9375 lbs.

All I can say is...

omigosh.

Hmm....6.25 lb/^2' ...

What's the average human providing in pressure just taking a step (one foot supporting all the weight)?? Over 1000

(no- I'm in NO WAY defending this usage -repeat, for the reading challenged - I'm NOT saying that this is a good thing
