MY Corolla CVT

A 2013-2014 corolla will be my next car.

Well built vehicle. Sat in a new one a few weeks ago and was more than impressed.

I disagree with the Prius comment versus the Corolla.

I can get a 2013 Corolla with low mileage for like 13 grand. The prius is much more money in the resale market.

Still not worth it to go hybrid in my eyes, even though the Prius is also a great car.

Gas is $2.97 here today in Texas.
 
CVT in the new Corolla, didn't realize they offered that.

Does it have shift paddles or the ability to down shift into preselected ratios? Thought it was a pretty useless feature in our CVT Impreza when we first got it, but I now find it to be pretty handy in the hills.

The Corolla LE I have does not have paddle shifters. I believe the S model does. Even if it had paddle shifters, I probably would not play with them too much. I'm thinking downshifting for braking on hills would probably stress the CVT. Cheaper to replace brakes than a transmission. I'm still not 100% sold on the durability of these things.

I'd think downshifting would be less stressful in general? Upshifts are usually at, if not full power then at whatever power the engine is making (yeah I know, late model stuff has communication so the trans can request the engine to cut back power). Downshifts just have to speed up the engine.

In the case of a CVT I'd think this would be even less dramatic than a tradtional transmission--even though the downshift is "stepped" it's still a linear movement. Nothing got disengaged then slammed into engagement.
