The cluster on my 2002 Buick Century is now completely dark.
The odometer light has been out for awhile but I could see the numbers with the other lights (in the cluster).

I have taken the cluster out before but never sent it for repair because I could get by without odometer lights. I can't get by with a completely dark cluster.

I just realized that I was using 'Rust Seal' (paint} on my underbody last week and this is the first time I've driven the car since. I was painting the radiator support and area near the headlight assembly. I'm wondering if I may have dislodged some wiring or covered the mechanism that dims the dash lights when exiting a tunnel???

Does anybody know how that dimmer mechanism works? I'd like to rule that out before removing the cluster for repair.

PS: If I need to have the cluster done should I have the 'total rebuild' or just replace the defective bulbs. It seems it's only a few dollars more to have new stepper motors put in. The car has 130K and the total rebuild is $125.

It's not bulbs, it's little 150 ohm surface mount resistors. The low lead solder fails and the resistors fall off the PCB.

...so you don't think it has anything to do with the 'dimmer'??
$125 plus shipping isn't bad for a complete rebuild so I'll probably go for that.

The dimmer doesn't really cut voltage to any incandescent filaments inside the cluster-- it's just a signal for the LED/Flourescent driver.

.....I just realized that my DRLs aren't ON either so I may have a problem other than with my cluster....I'll have to investigate further when it stops raining...
I find it odd that all the bulbs in the cluster would go out at once.
Does anyone have any idea what would make my DRLs and cluster act up?

some brands have the instrument panel and tail lights on the same fuse. so check the tail lights also. it would be nice to have a FACTORY manual to see how its wired. i have a manual for all most all of my cars, that i have had. about 35 manuals
