Do you know how the volatility of the 5W-20 is? I have a 5 quart jug of 5W-20 that I intend to put in my 96 CVPI after an Auto-RX clean and rinse phase.

I bought some Mobil 1 10w30 extended protection the other day and I'm surprised at just how thin it is compared to 10w30 conventional. If the PP 5W-20 is any thinner, then I may have made a mistake buying it.

Your Camaro is using oil because that PP 5w30 is too thin for it; plain and simple.

You need a full bodied oil like Maxlife 10w30 or Maxlife 10W-40.

Not true. My 98 Corvette has the same LS1 engine as his Camaro, and has 96k on the clock, and it loves PP 5w30. It uses slightly more oil than it did with GC, but not by a huge amount. (it burns roughly a quart every 4k, perfectly normal for the LS1 engine)

"My car doesn't like PP 5w30". Here in lies the mistake. The problem is, PP dose not like your car.

I poured in PP 5w30 into my 140k mile Lumina (3.1L); first fill with PP. I had to top off a quart at 4500 miles. I'd say no comsumption problems here, all things considered.

Time will tell how it does with SSO and an EaO filter. So far so good. It doesnt have the start up piston slap that it did with mobil 1. PP was a little better than mobil 1 with the piston slap and this SSO has completely eliminated it so far.

cars are like people , not everyones system is the same . When switched to the 5w30 MOBIL 1 and PLATINUM oils latter in the life of a 2000 PRIZM ( Corolla ) it started to consume oil faster , before that was MOBIL Clean 5w30 with very little consumption . As for our new '08 YARIS sedan ( less than 2,500 miles , PLAT at about 1,400 mis. ) and L.B. ( bit over 10,000 mis. , started PLAT at 1,500 mis. , currently running SYNPOWER 5w30 ) maybe a few ounces burned between the 2 .

Update: I got the "Oil Level Low" message on Tuesday morning when I parked at an angle, driver's door uppermost. When I checked the dipstick on the level, it read low. I put in the remaining pint of top-off oil to bring the level well into the cross-hatched area.

So to date, I've had to add a quart -- a pint at ~2400 miles and another at ~3400. I can't spot any leaks or any drippings under the engine.

And I had no leaks before PP. Those were short clean and rinse cycles with Auto-Rx; I didn't go more than 3K on the conventional Chevron I used for that purpose. But I had no low oil messages during those cycles.

Tempest and others have suggested that the consumption may stop during the next OCI. If it doesn't, then I'll go back to dino oil and see how that goes.

I switched to synpower 5-30 from M1 5-30 in the 2005 toyota 3.3L after using M1 for 22K mi and it also used about a quart the first 1500 miles after never using a drop before. I decided to stay with the synpower this oil change to see if oil use would stop and yep, it stopped. About 1300 miles on this oil and no drop on the dipstick. So now I'm a believer in what I was told here that it takes time for the engine/oil to all get along.
