This week we were given a new Sonata loaner by the dealership. It was the base model. These are my thoughts on the car:

Exterior: I always liked the sharp styling of this car. No complaints here...it's at the head of the class compared to the competition.

Interior: Overall, not bad. The front, center and rear pillars are big which limits visibility. The interior was soft plastic which was expected for the base model. The interior is large front to back but isn't much wider than my 2003 Corolla which was a bit disappointing. The center stack and dash was adequate and modern. The stock radio was good but the speakers produced terrible sound. Seats were firm.

Driving Experience: One thing that annoyed me was how easy it was to knock the shifter from "Auto" mode to the setting where you could select your gear. The engine and transmission work well together, a normal person would be surprised there wasn't a V-6 under the hood. The engine was smooth under acceleration but seemed to "miss" a bit at idle or when RPM's were low. By far, the biggest issue I have with the car is road noise. It's rather excessive and the biggest disappointment I have with the vehicle.

Conclusion: In order for me to buy a Sonata, it would have to be seriously discounted below $18K. Even if I could get it that low, I still would shop the competition. I travel quite a bit and the road noise is a big issue for me. For as much hype as this vehicle received when it was introduced, I came away a little disappointed. It would have been easy for Hyundai just to add a bit of sound insulation to have a real nice cruiser on their hands. Maybe we will see that on an upcoming refreshed version.

Thanks, I was curious about the 2011. I may get a new vehicle soon and I was wondering how it compared to the Altima 2.5S and Accord I4. I will probably get another Altima, I am very pleased with the quality especially compared to the Accord.

What road noise ? From engine or wind or tires ? If most noise is from the tires then it can be fixed with quieter tires, if the engine is noisy then it is hard to fix.

Thanks for the review. I must admit it has a different design and I'll give them accolades for that.
HOWEVER:
I don't know why there is a bunch of hype over Hyundai to begin with.
The only reason they got so popular is because they took sub-par cars (Don't even try to argue with me on this one) and slapped a 10 year warranty on it. Then bombarded the media with massive advertising. All of the sudden everyone loves them?! Wha wha what?!, did I miss a meeting?!

I am sure they have improved over the total garbage they produced in the 80s and 90s -But haven't the other companies too?

Engine noise would be from the engine, wind noise from wind, tire noise from the tires, and road noise, could it possibly be from the road? I'd take another road.

I think you did. Although I am not a fan, their quality is now right up with the rest, or better..

Did it have much float (bounce) at highway speeds (70 plus)? I had a rental several years ago that felt like I was driving a boat. That was my only grip…..I don’t remember road noise being that bad.

you probably missed several meetings.

and no, Honda and Toy-ota have become worse than they were but because of blind buyers and name-sake followers people don't notice it much.

I said it before and I will say it again, Hyundai is nothing special, it's just media darling for the moment.

Hyundai caught the right winds because between GM and Chrysler bailouts, fuel and financial crisis and Toyota's recalls, media had to find someone else.

So here comes Hyundai with their good pricing and good warranty, media came up with the rest.

Public went over this already with Toyota and Honda, only to come up to the conclusion that they're nothing special either. This will pass as well.

Hyundai vehicles are much better now than they were 10-15 years ago, their improvements in reliability, styling ... are much more than other companies. Comparing Sonata and Accord of 1995 and of 2011, Accord was much better than Sonata for model year 1995 but not better for model year 2011.

My main problem with Hyundai is substance.

Every owner I meet is always enthused about gizmos and gadgets. The toys are nice, but sooner or later you realize that the car itself is a little weak on real deep down driving satisfaction.

Lets flash forward 8 years from now- someone says you can have a 2011 Honda Accord with 190K or a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with a 190K- You would choose a Hyundai ?! Please...

I know I wouldn't.

A lot of other people might though, especially when the asking price on that future used Honda might be $12,000 and the asking price on the Hyundai is $6000.

You've solidified my point The fact that Honda will be worth more says a whole lot - Besides I said all other factors being equal. Lets assume they are free. Honda, hands down wins in my opinion.

We spend a whole lot of time disqualifying new oil (G- oil comes to mind) because they are not "tried and true."

I am more leaning on the Hyundai not being tried and true vs Honda, Toyota, Nissan etc etc

There is nothing special about a 2011 Accord that is any different from any other 2011 midsize on the market. Fast forward 8 years, if I am looking at cars with 190k miles on them I would pick based on condition, not by nameplate.

I assume you two own/owned a newer Hyundai or Kia.
If you have not, you really cannot provide an educated opinion, can you?

I've had my Kia for two years. Drives great, comfortable. Can't be any happier.
I am looking at Elantra Touring or Kia Forte5 as a third vehicle.

The parts distribution network and service facilities for Honda are better as a whole.

Also, I worked on a friend's Santa Fe recently. I was replacing the cabin filter and had to remove the glove box. The factory attachment method for the glove box was a piece of elastic that was secured with black duct tape. Most other brands use a hydraulic shock and a screw. 'Nuff said.
