I have a 02 Ford Escort zx2 w. 40k miles

The car calls for ATF mercon but many guys on the forum told me to go with a manual tranny fluid.

I bought Pennzoil Syncromesh and 3 qts went in instead of the 3.5 that were suppose to go in. ( i changed the fluid on a cold car)
Anyway with winter here the shifter is a little rought.. Cant compare to how it would be with ATF because its to late.

I was just wondering if i need to do a drain and refill again since the tranny holds around 6-7 qts total.

Did we go through this before?
Anyway, that manual trans takes 3-3.5 qts on a refill - it just depends. About 3.6 qts bone dry.
I don't know what you are referring to with 6-7 qts. An auto trans?
I use thicker fluid than the Penn Synch in mine, and it is great at Chicago temps. We were originally spec'd for gear oil, but ATF took over, BTW.
ATF will be thinner when cold, and can help feel.
But it is crud for the trans compared to a dedicated lube.
This also could be shifter bushings.

i read somewhere that doing a drain and refill wont get all of the old fluid out. Because another 3-4 qts is held in the tranny.

ps what fluid are you using?

That advice is for auto trannys. A simple pan removal and fill leaves 1/2 the fluid .
Manual transmissions are pretty empty when they are drained.

I am currently using Redline MTL/MT90 @ 50/50 mix. Really nice, and I have tried a bunch in this ZX2. I like Pennzoil Synchromesh very much, but it is a dino, and the Redline is full synthetic.

Forgive my memory if we have covered this ground, but go to http://teamzx2.com/ for all sorts of tips and info about these great cars.
