MTV was awesome in the early 80s!! They would play really obscure new wave bands that you'd otherwise never hear of.

A friend posted on FB that they were celebrating a 40-year anniversary of playing music videos for 5 years.

When it first debuted there were no ads.
Anyone remember New Jersey's own "Uncle Floyd"?
He asked viewers to randomly color and mail in his "NTV" flag (like the one in the Moon video).
It stood for "Nonsense Television".

Use to watch a little bit in the 80's the beginning of the VHS rentals in the east. Most of the programming and production seem quite juvenile - even to my 25 year old self at the time.
But my roommate at the time was a classic film buff and usually had a stack of stuff to watch on our - then new - Panasonic VCR with wired remote (!) At least you couldn't loose the thing.

Then MTV re-branded Palladia - a great music history channel available on the East Coast that was really well produced - and then proceeded to ruined it with reruns of old content and no new worthwhile content.
I've truly hated them for that ever since, but I've never really liked them to begin with.

Grew up on it. It was all about the music. It was amazing between 1988-1998. Then it kind of sponsored the Woodstock 99 show and that was the end.
Palladia was GREAT for a few years. GREAT. I agree with you.

The end of mtv imo were those dumb game shows they started doing. 1987 was the end of mtv.

I was a Jr in College 1992 till I got to watch MTV or really cable TV. I grew up with two channels broadcast on air ABC and NBC.
I really liked unplugged MTV and a show called Liquid Television on it which is where Beavis and Butthead originated with (sick demented) Frog Baseball.

Yo! MTV Raps dealt the crippling blow, and The Real World sealed the coffin, at least for me.
