MTV is 40...

Agree with the consensus, MTV was fantastic for about a decade until it descended into drama-TV and garbage nonsense. They should have instead created a second channel for that stupid stuff and left the video channel undisturbed. MTV did not really create any noteworthy content.

VH1 actually created some of the best music content with their "Behind the Music" episodes. I still watch those!

I was a big Martha Quinn fan; loved the pixie hair she sometimes had; the free spirit and girl next door aspect of her was appealing too.

She even pronounced "Spokane" correctly.

Anyone remember New Jersey's own "Uncle Floyd"?
He asked viewers to randomly color and mail in his "NTV" flag (like the one in the Moon video).
It stood for "Nonsense Television".
Don't yell at me, I'm just reminiscing the dawn of cable TV.
Oh, yeah. I remember him and his silly hat.

Anyone remember Biker Billy Cooks With Fire?

Heck, when is the last time they actually even played a music video?
They could be out of business for all I care. First thing that did it was Jersey Shore, and the few times I’ve seen the channel after that it has been the lowest of low class stuff that I have absolutely no interest in. I’ve boycotted cable personally for over 20 years, but have seen these channels in hotels and others’ homes, and it offers nothing of interest to me.

I'm a product of the 80's so I loved MTV, back when it was MUSIC television. Then the garbage came along; "reality" TV (which is anything but reality), etc.

MTV was a victim of it's own success. It brought a new concept forth; a desirable product melded into a dedicated media. And then it became irrelevant due to personal video-based tools like cell phones and laptops. While music itself survives, the "fad" of seeing music videos has died off. YouTube and other services do much more, offer broader content, offer personalize searches, etc. MTV should have been killed off two decades ago; no one has had the decency to properly cull the tired old beast.

Same goes for satelite radio and TV (I subscribe to SXM, at least for now ....). But it see it as a dying breed. It's too easy to just stream IHR, Pandora, etc on a device you already pay for. Paying for a satelite service is just redundant spending. Direct TV is also dying off; owned by ATT. They are desparate to keep it alive, but it's too easy to pay for other streaming services and get more personalized products you actually want.

I've been enjoying SXM's retro look back into the MTV haydays; several of the old VJs are now on SXM.

Listen to them on the 80's channel, Mark and Nina still carry those distinctive voices. ;)

Sometimes i wish i was older to have experienced the 80s. What a glorious time for so many things.

My parents were poor and never had cable TV. I saw it a few times at friends houses. I miss the music of the 80's. But not watching my parents struggle to keep a roof over their heads.
