Bought a new 140 cc MTD push lawn mower today. It came with a bottle of oil. I was pouring the oil in the engine and noticed it was a translucent clear color, not like the usual golden color I'm used too with new motor oil.

What gives?

Different additives have different colors, it is probably not as robust as our favorite oils. The base oils are clear themselves, the PI package gives most oil it's color.

Often times mower oils carry obsolete API ratings or API SG, which is pretty light on additives, did you see the API rating on the bottle wording?

If you're looking for one of the best over the counter oils for a mower I like Mobil 1 High Mileage, it's API SL rated with extra ZDDP. API SL is a good rating category for air cooled mowers. Quaker State defy also works great if you don't like synthetic.

Personally, the colour of motor oil never bothers me, never has been, never will be.

Used motor oil from gasoline automobiles can be all shades of brown; used diesel motor oil is always 1 colour and that is black!

New fresh oil too light or too dark in colour?!

*laughs*

Actually....API SG has more ZDDP aditives than newer API ratings...majority of motocycle oils with shared sump are API SG rated (+ JASO MA/MA2)

MTD mower oil has been good stuff. Also Yardmen synthetic for the snow thrower worked as well as the finest in my Yaris.

My 3.5 briggs doesn't care though.

Big ZDP in these oils - over 0.1% last VOA I saw.

Which is over 1,000 ppm for those used to that language.

I am sure the oil is fine. Trying shaking up the bottle. I would use that and change it out after about 10-15 mows and change over to an oil of your choice.
