Mr Heater Propane heater?

1. 55 cents per pound for propane sounds cheap for my area in Tennessee. If you are buying propane in the 20 pound exchange refill tanks please be aware that nearly all only fill with 14 pounds.
2. The Mr Buddy will probably not heat a shop. Mine does nothing for my shop. I use it for hunting.
3. If I want to heat the shop I go for the 60,000 Dyna Glo with the fan to move the heat. I have one of those also.
4. If I am working in one place in the shop I use a tank top propane heater rated at 15,000 btu.
5. I have tried different Kerosene - diesel units and they stop up my head.
6. My shop is not insulated and 900 sq ft.. Hope this helps

I don't think the 9000 btu heater will heat that space. I think you may lose btu's faster than you burn them. If it was a completely insulated room maybe but as cold as it gets there its not enough.

That must depend on the shop, state or some other local regulation. I take my 20 pound tank to BJs all the time and they put in 18 pounds. You can see the meter they use to fill it, always a tad over 4.2 gallons and they charge by the gallon. Those tank exchange places are the ones that only do 15-16 pounds.

I go to Tractor Supply and they fill my tanks to the top. It's a far better deal than the prefilled tanks. It's about 4.2 gallons on the 20 pound tanks, and 24 gallons on the 100 pound ones.

These "Sunflower head" heaters has REALLY proven themselves over the years.

They are a perfect solution to many, many heating needs.

I have one of these I used in my 3 car garage if I have to work on a car during winter.

I just put it on the side of the car where I'm working, pull the car in, shut and lock down the garage door so someone doesn't open it from the outside with an opener and let out all the heat.

Keeps me warm enough if I have to do an oil change or change out some brakes, etc.

I try to plan those things for spring and fall or a nicer weather day in the case of oil changes. But sometimes you have to do the job this weekend and the forecast is 20F...

Then I'd need a chimney. And I'm not sure my insurance would like the idea.

Meanwhile I'm considering asphyxiation.

The 55c/ lb is from BJs wholesale, 20 lbs at $11. This is cheaper than my "big" tank with propane delivery at $4.999/gal.

Well then, how in the eff does Santa break into your house!?

Well, good fortune rang my bell this morning and I bought a 30k BTU model. Per the seller his phone was ringing off the hook. Fired it up on this grey October day with sleet pelting my bare metal roof, and I can say, glad I didn't get the 9k.

They're light red, fool! :P

I needed to heat my garage as my big Mastiff sleeps in the garage. I have a propane torpedo heater and a CO/explosive gas alarm. At the end of the day I bought a 5000/8000 watt electric heater as it's the only heater I could trust when I was sleeping.

Going to put in vent pipe and fan to pull the heat from the ceiling and blow it at floor level.

There hasn't been much discussion on insulation. If someone is serious about heating their garage then you really should insulate the attic space complete with vapour barrier and drywall. Insulate and drywall the walls ( you don't have to mud and tape If you want to keep the costs down). Install an insulated garage door.
Once you're done, about 5,000 watts of electric heat in a normal two car garage should keep it toasty.

Note that you could get 1,000 watts of heat just by installing a lot of lighting. I would go electric and sleep well. A garage wired for just 110 V should be able to run two 1500 W heaters. ( but not much else) . You could add some Catalytic propane heaters if you need the power for machinery. YRMV.
